What is IBT?
Industrial Biotechnology (often called white biotechnology) is about manufacturing. You learn how to choose and improve a microbe or enzyme, grow it in fermenters, convert raw materials such as sugarcane, starch or agricultural waste into a product, and then purify that product economically. The course blends microbiology, genetic engineering and enzyme technology with unit operations, bioprocess engineering and plant design.
How it differs: general Biotechnology covers medical, agricultural and research applications more evenly; Biochemical Engineering has a heavier chemical-engineering core; Genetic Engineering concentrates on DNA. Industrial Biotechnology keeps the focus on factories and products, including green alternatives to petrochemicals. It is unrelated to Biomedical Engineering (medical devices).
The programme is offered at Anna University's Alagappa College of Technology, Government College of Technology Coimbatore and Government College of Engineering Tirunelveli, all through TNEA. Elsewhere in India the same content is taught under Biotechnology.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) pass with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; under TNEA rules, biotechnology branches may also accept Biology in place of Mathematics, so check the current TNEA prospectus.
- Minimum aggregate in the qualifying subjects: about 45% for the general category and 40% for reserved categories at TNEA colleges (some listings show 50% for general at government colleges); check the current year's notification.
- Tamil Nadu nativity or schooling rules apply to most TNEA seats; other-state students can apply only to a limited number of seats.
- Lateral entry: diploma holders in a related branch (and B.Sc. graduates with Mathematics) can usually join the second year through state lateral-entry counselling.
How admission works
- Complete Class 12 with the required subjects and marks.
- Register online for TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions); there is no entrance test, and the rank is based on Class 12 marks.
- Upload certificates and attend online verification.
- Take part in the online choice-filling and allotment rounds and pick Industrial Biotechnology at your preferred college.
- Confirm the allotment, report to the college and pay the fee.

Salary
Freshers usually earn ₹3–6 LPA (approx.) in production, QC and process roles; government-college graduates with good internships may get more. After 5–8 years in plant management or process development, pay is often ₹8–18 LPA (approx.).
Pay depends on the industry (biopharma pays more than food or distilleries), plant location and shift allowances, and on higher qualifications such as an M.Tech. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Industrial biotech is the largest part of India's bioeconomy, at about 47% of a sector valued near US$166 billion in 2024 (India BioEconomy Report 2025). Ethanol blending in petrol, the BioE3 policy's focus on bio-manufacturing, and demand for enzymes, bioplastics and fermented food ingredients are all expanding this space.
Graduates who understand both microbiology and process engineering, and who are willing to start on the plant floor, should find steady demand, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana.
After this course
- M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology or Bioprocess Technology via GATE (BT)
- M.Tech Biotechnology at IITs and NITs
- MS abroad in bioprocess or industrial biotechnology
- MBA in operations or supply chain
- PhD in bioenergy, enzymes or bio-based materials
IBT FAQs
What is Industrial Biotechnology?
It is a B.Tech that uses microbes and enzymes to manufacture products such as enzymes, antibiotics, biofuels and bioplastics at factory scale. It combines biology with process engineering.
How is Industrial Biotechnology different from Biotechnology?
Biotechnology covers medical, agricultural and industrial uses broadly. Industrial Biotechnology concentrates on large-scale production and has more process and plant-design subjects.
Which colleges offer B.Tech Industrial Biotechnology?
Mainly Tamil Nadu colleges: Anna University's Alagappa College of Technology in Chennai, Government College of Technology Coimbatore and Government College of Engineering Tirunelveli, plus Bharath Institute (BIHER).
Is there an entrance exam for Industrial Biotechnology in Tamil Nadu?
No. TNEA admissions are based on Class 12 marks in the relevant subjects, followed by online counselling.
What jobs can I get after Industrial Biotechnology?
Common roles are fermentation or production executive, QC analyst, process development associate and bioenergy engineer in pharma, enzyme, food and ethanol companies.
