List of Top Medical Colleges in India 2026: NIRF Ranks & Fees

Looking for a reliable list of top medical colleges in India for 2026? This guide covers the 20 best medical institutes in the latest official ranking, NIRF 2025 (Medical category). It also explains which of them actually offer MBBS, how NEET UG and counselling decide your seat, and what fees and bonds you should plan for.

AIIMS New Delhi has been ranked number one in the NIRF Medical list every year since the category began in 2018. Close behind are PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore and JIPMER Puducherry. As of October 2026 the NIRF 2026 results have not been confirmed on the official portal, so this guide uses the 2025 edition, released on 4 September 2025.

Quick answer: As per NIRF 2025 (Medical), the top 5 medical colleges in India are AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, JIPMER Puducherry and SGPGIMS Lucknow. For MBBS, you need a NEET UG score. Seats are then filled through MCC counselling (15% All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER, central and deemed universities) or through state counselling (85% state quota).

  • Deemed universities: Saveetha (11), D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Pune (12), Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (15), SRM (18) and Datta Meghe, now the Adani Institute (20), offer good infrastructure. Their fees are much higher, usually several lakh rupees a year or more.

How many MBBS seats are there in India?

India has expanded its MBBS capacity quickly. According to the National Medical Commission's final seat matrix for 2025-26, as reported by medical education news outlets, India has about 1,29,026 MBBS seats, up from 1,17,750 in 2024-25. They are spread across more than 800 medical colleges. Roughly half the seats are in government colleges and half in private and deemed colleges.

Seat numbers for 2026-27 may change as the NMC approves new colleges, so check nmc.org.in and the MCC seat matrix for the latest figures.

How admission to top medical colleges works

Every MBBS seat in India, at AIIMS, JIPMER, government, private and deemed colleges alike, is filled on the basis of NEET UG. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Check eligibility: pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English. You need the minimum marks in PCB set by the NMC, generally 50% for General and 40% for SC/ST/OBC. You must be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year.
  2. Register and appear for NEET UG: registration usually opens in February. The pen-and-paper exam is held in May. Check neet.nta.nic.in for official dates.
  3. Qualify with the required percentile: you need the 50th percentile for General candidates and the 40th percentile for SC/ST/OBC. Qualifying alone is not enough for a top college, though. AIIMS Delhi and similar institutes close at the very top ranks.
  4. MCC counselling (central): the Medical Counselling Committee (mcc.nic.in) fills 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges. It also fills all MBBS seats at AIIMS and JIPMER, seats at central universities such as BHU, AMU and DU, ESIC seats and deemed-university seats.
  5. State counselling: each state fills its 85% state-quota government seats and private college seats through its own counselling, using NEET ranks plus a domicile requirement.
  6. Choice filling, allotment and reporting: fill choices carefully, track each round (Round 1, Round 2, Mop-up, Stray), and report with original documents within the deadline.

NEET UG 2026 at a glance: the original exam held on 3 May 2026 was cancelled after a paper-leak investigation. NTA conducted a re-exam on 21 June 2026 and declared results on 16 July 2026. About 11.21 lakh candidates qualified, and the highest score was 715 out of 720. Always confirm dates for the next cycle on the official NTA website.

MBBS fees: government vs private vs deemed colleges

Fees vary enormously by type of college. The table gives approximate ranges for the full course. Actual fees depend on the state, the quota and the year.

College typeExamplesApprox. MBBS fees (full course, 2025)
AIIMS / JIPMER (INI)AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Rishikesh, JIPMERVery low: from a few thousand rupees
Central / state government collegesBHU IMS, KGMU, Madras Medical CollegeApprox. ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh, depending on the state
Private colleges (state quota)State-counselling private collegesApprox. ₹40 lakh to ₹1 crore
Deemed universitiesAmrita, KMC Manipal, Saveetha, D. Y. PatilApprox. ₹50 lakh to ₹1.25 crore or more

Verify before you choose: fees, hostel charges and security deposits change every year. Always read the latest fee notice on the college website or the MCC/state counselling portal before filling choices.

Service bonds

Many states require MBBS graduates from government colleges to sign a service bond. The bond asks you to work in a government hospital for a fixed period, often one to a few years, or pay a penalty. Bond rules differ widely from state to state and change often. Check your state's counselling brochure before accepting a seat.

How to choose the right medical college

Tip: A government college lower in the NIRF list often gives a better return than an expensive private college ranked higher, especially when your family's budget is limited.

  • Check whether it offers MBBS: PGIMER, SGPGIMS, NIMHANS and SCTIMST rank high but do not admit MBBS students.
  • Clinical exposure: a bigger hospital with a heavy patient load means more hands-on learning.
  • Total cost: add tuition, hostel, mess, books and caution deposits for the full course.
  • Bond and stipend rules: compare internship stipends and service bond terms across states.
  • Location and language: patients in many states speak the local language, which matters during clinical postings.
  • Previous cut-offs: use last year's closing ranks on MCC and state portals to build a realistic choice list.

Careers after MBBS

An MBBS graduate can do a one-year internship and register with the NMC or a state medical council to practise as a doctor. Most students then go on to postgraduate study (MD/MS/DNB) through NEET PG, or INI-CET for AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER and NIMHANS. Other paths include government medical service through state PSCs or UPSC CMS, research, public health, the armed forces medical services, hospital administration and medical teaching.

Scholarships and funding for medical students

Even at low-fee government colleges, hostel and living costs add up, and private seats can be very expensive. Students can look at the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for central post-matric and merit schemes, plus state scholarships for SC/ST/OBC, minority and economically weaker students. Many states also offer fee reimbursement for students from low-income families.

You can also explore merit-based options such as the AISEE scholarship for medical students. Check the important dates for the scholarship examination so you do not miss the deadline, and look at scholarships after 12th in India for more ideas.
