List of Top Universities in Punjab 2026: NIRF Ranks & Fees

Looking for the top universities in Punjab for 2026? Punjab offers an IIT at Ropar, an NIT at Jalandhar, IISER and NIPER in Mohali, one of India's best farm universities in Ludhiana, and large private universities such as Chandigarh University, Lovely Professional University and Thapar Institute. This guide lists the 15 best options with their official NIRF 2025 ranks, popular courses, admission routes and approximate fees.

Punjab draws students from all over North India, and many come from other states too. The state mixes old public universities in Patiala, Amritsar and Ludhiana with newer national institutes and fast-growing private campuses around Mohali and Phagwara. Fees range from almost nothing at AIIMS to several lakh rupees a year at private universities, so knowing your options matters.

All ranks below come from the NIRF India Rankings 2025, released by the Ministry of Education on 4 September 2025. It is the latest edition we could confirm from at least two independent sources when this guide was written. We name the category with every rank, because the same institute can have very different positions in different NIRF lists.

Quick answer: The top universities in Punjab in 2026 are IIT Ropar (NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 32), Thapar Institute, Patiala (University rank 26), Chandigarh University, Mohali (University rank 19, Overall rank 32), Lovely Professional University (University rank 31) and Punjab Agricultural University (Agriculture rank 3). Panjab University, Chandigarh (University rank 35), IISER Mohali, NIT Jalandhar and NIPER Mohali are also excellent choices.

Our order weighs NIRF 2025 results, the type of institute, how selective admission is and the strength of key programmes. The table shows each institute's most relevant NIRF 2025 rank. "No NIRF 2025 rank" means we could not find the institute in any published NIRF 2025 list.

PGIMER Chandigarh (NIRF 2025 Medical rank 2) is also in Chandigarh, not in Punjab.

How admission works at top universities in Punjab

Each institute uses its own route, so plan your exams in advance. Here is the usual path:

  1. Pick your stream and target institutes in Class 11, so you know which exams to prepare for.
  2. Engineering: take JEE Main (for NIT Jalandhar, Thapar, PU's UIET and many private colleges) and JEE Advanced (for IIT Ropar). Seats are filled through JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
  3. Medical: qualify NEET-UG for AIIMS Bathinda, government medical colleges and private colleges such as DMC and CMC Ludhiana. State quota seats are filled by Punjab's counselling authority.
  4. Central universities and general degrees: appear for CUET-UG (Central University of Punjab and others) or the university's own test, such as PU-CET.
  5. Science research, pharmacy and agriculture: IISER Aptitude Test for IISER Mohali, NIPER JEE for NIPER, and PAU CET for Punjab Agricultural University.
  6. Private universities: CUCET (Chandigarh University) and LPUNEST (LPU) decide both admission and scholarship slabs, though many courses also accept JEE Main or Class 12 marks.
  7. Law and management: CLAT for RGNUL Patiala; CAT for IIM Amritsar.

Check dates and fees yourself: Exam dates, eligibility, seat matrices and fees change every year. Treat the fee figures in this guide as rough 2025–26 estimates and confirm them on each official website before paying anything.

How to choose the right college in Punjab

A high rank is useful, but it should not be your only filter. Think about these points before you lock your choices:

  • Check the right NIRF category. Use the Engineering list for B.Tech, Pharmacy for B.Pharm and Agriculture for B.Sc Agriculture, not just the Overall list.
  • Compare total cost. Add tuition, hostel, mess and exam fees for all years. Public institutes like NIT Jalandhar or Punjabi University can cost far less than private universities.
  • Look at placement reports for your specific branch, not only the highest package.
  • Read the scholarship rules. Private universities often link fee cuts to entrance scores and require you to keep a minimum CGPA.
  • Visit if you can. Mohali, Patiala, Ludhiana and Phagwara are well connected by road and rail, so a campus visit is easy.

Tip: If you are from Punjab, NIT Jalandhar's home-state quota and PAU's state seats can give you a much better chance than the all-India cut-offs suggest.

Scholarships and financial help

Good education in Punjab does not have to be expensive. IITs and NITs give fee waivers to lower-income families, and private universities offer merit discounts based on their entrance tests.

You can also apply for national merit scholarships such as the AISEE scholarship (All India Scholarship Entrance Examination). It is open to Class 12 and college students in engineering, medical and other courses. See the full list of scholarships in India and options for engineering students.

Government schemes are listed on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Punjab also runs its own schemes, such as the Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Caste students, through its state scholarship portal. To compare more options, read our guide to scholarships after 12th in India.
