What is Biotech?
Biotechnology Engineering teaches how genes, proteins and cells work, and then how to engineer them. You learn to clone genes, grow microbes and animal cells in bioreactors, purify proteins, design diagnostic kits and analyse DNA data with software. Labs are a big part of the course, from microbiology and genetic engineering to fermentation and bioprocess pilot plants.
It is the broadest of the bio branches. Biochemical Engineering leans more on chemical-engineering maths (reactors, mass transfer, scale-up); Biomedical Engineering is about medical devices and imaging, not cells and molecules; Genetic Engineering narrows down to DNA manipulation; and Industrial Biotechnology focuses on factory-scale bio-manufacturing. A B.Tech in Biotechnology keeps all these doors partly open.
At IITs the branch goes by different names, for example Biological Engineering at IIT Madras and Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at IIT Hyderabad. A B.Sc. in Biotechnology is a different, science-only degree; the B.Tech adds engineering subjects and bioprocess design.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) pass with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or another permitted subject.
- AICTE minimum: 45% aggregate in these subjects (40% for reserved categories in most states); many colleges ask for more.
- IITs, NITs, IIITs and other JoSAA institutes also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows two attempts in consecutive years. Check each state CET for its own rules.
- Some private universities and state counsellings (for example SRM, VIT and TNEA for biotechnology branches) also accept PCB students without Mathematics; JoSAA institutes do not.
- Lateral entry: diploma holders in a related branch (and B.Sc. graduates with Mathematics) can usually join the second year through state lateral-entry counselling.
How admission works
- Pick a stream in Class 11–12 that keeps Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (add Biology if you can).
- Write JEE Main (January and April sessions); qualify for JEE Advanced if you are aiming at IITs.
- Register for JoSAA/CSAB counselling (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) or your state counselling, and fill choices for the branch.
- Accept the allotted seat, pay the seat-acceptance fee and upload documents (Class 10 and 12 marksheets, category/EWS and domicile certificates).
- Report to the institute for document verification and pay the first-semester fee. Private universities follow their own test (VITEEE, SRMJEEE, MET) and counselling.

Salary
Most freshers start at ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.) in production, QC, research or bioinformatics roles. Graduates of top IITs and NITs who also have coding or data skills can get ₹8–15 LPA (approx.), often in analytics or consulting.
Pay in core biotech grows faster after a master's or PhD: scientists and managers with 6–10 years' experience often earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.). Location (Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune), a specialised skill such as cell culture or regulatory work, and the employer's size matter a lot. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's bioeconomy was valued at about US$166 billion in 2024 (India BioEconomy Report 2025), and the government's BioE3 policy aims to grow bio-manufacturing of medicines, enzymes, food and green chemicals. Vaccine makers, biosimilar companies and contract research and manufacturing firms in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune are expanding.
Competition for good core jobs is real, so students who add skills in bioinformatics, data analysis, cell culture or quality and regulatory work, or who go on to an M.Tech or PhD, tend to do best.
After this course
- M.Tech Biotechnology or Bioprocess Engineering via GATE (BT)
- MS or PhD abroad (USA, Germany, Singapore)
- Integrated PhD at IISc, NCBS or other research institutes
- MBA in pharma or healthcare management
- PG diplomas in clinical research or regulatory affairs
- Research fellowships through CSIR-NET / DBT-JRF
Biotech FAQs
What is the difference between B.Tech Biotechnology and B.Sc Biotechnology?
The B.Tech is a four-year engineering degree that adds maths, process engineering and plant design to biology. The B.Sc is a three or four-year science degree focused on lab biology and usually leads to M.Sc and research.
Can I take Biotechnology Engineering with PCB?
At some private universities and in some state counsellings, yes. IITs, NITs and other JoSAA institutes require Mathematics in Class 12.
Which IITs offer biotechnology?
IIT Madras (Biological Engineering), IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur (biotech with biochemical engineering), IIT Hyderabad (Biotechnology and Bioinformatics), and IIT Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee (biosciences and bioengineering programmes), among others.
Is biotechnology a good career in India?
It is rewarding if you build strong lab or data skills and are open to higher studies. Starting pay is moderate, but growth is good in biopharma, vaccines and research.
Do biotech engineers need to do a master's?
Not always, but R&D and scientist roles usually prefer an M.Tech, MS or PhD. Production, QC and bioinformatics roles hire B.Tech graduates directly.
Which GATE paper do biotechnology students write?
GATE Biotechnology (BT). Some students also take Life Sciences (XL) depending on the institute they target.
