What is Biochem Engg.?
Biochemical Engineering is best understood as a branch of chemical engineering. Its core is engineering maths: material and energy balances, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics and process control. These are then applied to living catalysts: microbial growth, enzyme kinetics, sterilisation, oxygen transfer in bioreactors, and the separation and purification of products from complex broths.
How it differs: compared with Biotechnology, you spend less time on genetics and wet-lab biology and more on equipment design and scale-up. Compared with Chemical Engineering, the processes run at mild temperatures with fragile cells, so sterility, contamination control and GMP rules matter much more. Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering (IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi) blends the two; Biomedical Engineering is unrelated (medical devices).
Very few colleges offer a stand-alone degree with this name. The best known is the School of Biochemical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi; Harcourt Butler Technical University, Kanpur, also runs a B.Tech. Elsewhere the same skills are taught inside biotechnology or chemical engineering programmes.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) pass with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or another permitted subject.
- AICTE minimum: 45% aggregate in these subjects (40% for reserved categories in most states); many colleges ask for more.
- IITs, NITs, IIITs and other JoSAA institutes also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows two attempts in consecutive years. Check each state CET for its own rules.
- IIT (BHU) admits only through JEE Advanced and JoSAA; HBTU Kanpur admits on JEE Main ranks through its own counselling; check the current HBTU admission notice.
How admission works
- Take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11–12.
- Write JEE Main; qualify for JEE Advanced if you are targeting IIT (BHU).
- Choose Biochemical Engineering in JoSAA counselling, or in HBTU's JEE Main-based counselling for Kanpur.
- Accept the seat, pay the acceptance fee and upload documents (marksheets, category and domicile certificates).
- Report for verification; at IIT (BHU) you can later opt for the dual-degree (IDD) track if offered that year.

Salary
Freshers usually start at ₹4–8 LPA (approx.) in process, production and QA roles; IIT graduates often receive higher offers, sometimes from analytics or consulting firms. With 5–8 years in process development or plant management, pay commonly reaches ₹12–20 LPA (approx.).
Pay depends on the employer (multinational biopharma pays more than small fermentation units), on plant location and shift allowances, and on whether you add an M.Tech or MS. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Industrial biotech makes up close to half of India's bioeconomy, and the BioE3 policy, ethanol blending targets and the growth of biosimilars and vaccines all need engineers who can design and run bioprocess plants. Few colleges train students specifically for this, so well-trained biochemical engineers stand out.
Because the degree carries a full chemical-engineering core, graduates can also move into chemicals, food processing, water treatment and energy if the biotech job market slows.
After this course
- M.Tech in Biochemical or Chemical Engineering via GATE
- Dual degree at IIT (BHU)
- MS/PhD abroad in chemical or bioprocess engineering
- MBA in operations or pharma management
- PhD in bioprocess, metabolic engineering or bioenergy
Biochem Engg. FAQs
Is Biochemical Engineering the same as Biotechnology?
No. Biochemical Engineering is closer to chemical engineering and focuses on designing and scaling up bioprocesses. Biotechnology spends more time on molecular biology, genetics and lab techniques.
Which colleges offer B.Tech Biochemical Engineering?
IIT (BHU) Varanasi is the best known, with its School of Biochemical Engineering. IIT Delhi offers a B.Tech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and HBTU Kanpur offers a B.Tech in Biochemical Engineering.
Do I need Biology in Class 12?
No. You need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Biochemistry and microbiology are taught from the basics in college.
Can biochemical engineers work in chemical companies?
Yes. The course covers the same core subjects as chemical engineering, so many graduates take process roles in chemicals, food and energy companies.
Which GATE paper should I take after Biochemical Engineering?
Most students take GATE Biotechnology (BT) or Chemical Engineering (CH), depending on whether they want bio-focused or process-focused M.Tech and jobs.
