What is Food Tech?
Every biscuit packet, bottle of juice and carton of milk passes through processes designed by food technologists. The B.Tech in Food Technology teaches how foods behave physically, chemically and microbiologically, and how to process them at scale without losing taste, nutrition or safety.
You study food chemistry, food microbiology, unit operations (heating, cooling, drying, extrusion), fruit, vegetable, cereal, dairy and meat processing, packaging, sensory evaluation and food laws such as the FSS Act enforced by FSSAI. In-plant training in a factory is usually compulsory.
Compared with Agricultural and Food Engineering, Food Technology is more product- and chemistry-oriented. Compared with a B.Sc in Food Science, the B.Tech is AICTE-style engineering with more process and plant design. Specialised institutes such as NIFTEM offer B.Tech in Food Technology and Management.

Salary
Most freshers start at about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.); NIFTEM and ICT graduates placed with large FMCG companies often get offers above this range. With 5–10 years in QA, production or R&D, salaries commonly reach ₹10–20 LPA (approx.).
Pay depends on the employer (FMCG multinationals pay more than small processors), plant location, certifications such as FSSC 22000 or HACCP, and a master's degree. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's food processing sector is among the country's largest employers, and government programmes such as the PLI scheme for food processing, PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) and mega food parks are adding plants in every region. Stricter FSSAI rules on labelling and safety also increase demand for trained quality and regulatory staff.
Growth areas in 2026 include ready-to-eat and frozen foods, millets and health foods, plant-based proteins, sustainable packaging and food exports. Graduates who add data analytics, automation or regulatory expertise will find the widest choice of jobs.
After this course
- M.Tech in Food Technology or Food Process Engineering via GATE (XL/XE/AG)
- MS abroad in Food Science (USA, Canada, Europe, Australia)
- MBA in Agri-business or FMCG management
- PhD in food science for research and teaching
- Food Safety Officer and other state public service exams
Food Tech FAQs
Can PCB students study B.Tech Food Technology?
Some agricultural universities and private colleges accept PCB, but most engineering colleges require PCM. Check each college's eligibility before applying.
Which is the best institute for Food Technology in India?
NIFTEM Kundli, NIFTEM Thanjavur and ICT Mumbai are among the best known. Several agricultural universities such as TNAU and PAU also have strong programmes.
Is NIFTEM admission through JEE Main?
Yes. NIFTEM Kundli and NIFTEM Thanjavur admit B.Tech students through JEE Main ranks and JoSAA/CSAB counselling. Check the current year's seat matrix.
