List of Top Universities in Haryana 2026: NIRF Ranks & Fees
A 2026 guide to the top universities in Haryana, from NIT Kurukshetra, IIM Rohtak and NDRI Karnal to Ashoka, MMU and state universities, with NIRF 2025 ranks, courses, fees and admission.

Searching for the top universities in Haryana for 2026? Haryana is home to an NIT in Kurukshetra, an IIM in Rohtak, one of India's two best agricultural research universities in Karnal, and well-known private campuses in Sonipat, Gurugram and Faridabad. This guide lists the 15 best options with their NIRF 2025 ranks, popular courses, admission routes and approximate fees.
Being next to Delhi has shaped the top universities in Haryana. Sonipat and the Gurugram–Faridabad belt hold many private universities, while state universities in Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Hisar offer some of the cheapest degrees in North India.
All ranks below come from the NIRF India Rankings 2025, released by the Ministry of Education on 4 September 2025. As of late October 2026, we could not confirm an official NIRF 2026 release, so the 2025 edition is the latest one we could check. We name the category with every rank, because one institute can sit in very different places on different NIRF lists.
Quick answer: The top universities and institutes in Haryana in 2026 are NIT Kurukshetra (NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 85), IIM Rohtak (Management rank 19), ICAR-NDRI Karnal (Agriculture rank 2) and MDI Gurugram (Management rank 9). How admission works in Haryana universities
Each course has its own route:
- B.Tech: Take JEE Main. NIT Kurukshetra fills seats through JoSAA. State universities such as DCRUST, GJUST, KUK and MDU fill seats through Haryana State Technical Education Society (HSTES) online counselling.
- MBBS/BDS: Clear NEET-UG. State-quota seats go through Haryana state counselling; deemed universities such as MMU fill seats through MCC counselling.
- BA, B.Sc, B.Com: State universities use merit or their own entrance tests. Central University of Haryana uses CUET-UG.
- Agriculture and dairy: CCS HAU runs its own entrance for state seats. NDRI and the ICAR quota use CUET-UG with ICAR counselling.
- Law: CLAT, LSAT—India or university tests, depending on the institute.
- MBA: CAT for IIM Rohtak and MDI; CAT, MAT, CMAT or university tests for others. IIM Rohtak's IPM takes students right after Class 12.
How to choose the right college in Haryana
A high rank is a good start, but not the whole story. When comparing the top universities in Haryana, weigh course, budget and career plans together.
- Check the right NIRF list. For engineering, look at the Engineering ranking; for an MBA, the Management ranking. The University list mixes all subjects.
- Compare total cost. State universities can cost a tenth of private ones. Add hostel and mess charges to tuition.
- Look at placements. Ask for the latest median salary, not just the highest package, and check the NIRF data each institute publishes.
- Confirm approvals. Check that the university is listed by UGC, and that professional courses carry AICTE, NMC, NDC, PCI or BCI approval.
- Think about location. Gurugram and Sonipat offer industry access near Delhi, while Kurukshetra, Hisar and Rohtak are quieter and cheaper.
Tip: Haryana-domicile students get a large share of seats in state universities and state engineering colleges. Keep your domicile certificate and category certificates ready before counselling starts.
Scholarships and funding for Haryana students
Many private universities in Haryana give merit-based fee waivers, and Ashoka offers need-based aid. Government schemes add more support.
- National Scholarship Portal (NSP): Central schemes such as the Central Sector Scheme and post-matric scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and minority students are listed at scholarships.gov.in.
- Haryana state scholarships: The state runs post-matric scholarships for SC and BC students and other merit schemes through its official scholarship portal.
- Institute fee waivers: NITs and IIMs give fee waivers to students from low-income families.
- AISEE: You can also take the AISEE scholarship exam for college students, a national merit test that offers scholarships for engineering, medical and other courses.
For a wider list of schemes, read our guide to scholarships after 12th in India, and see which colleges accept AISEE in the participating college and university list.
