Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering (BT & BCE)

Biology plus chemical-engineering muscle to scale up vaccines, enzymes and biologics

Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering is a four-year B.Tech that pairs modern biology (genetics, molecular and cell biology) with the chemical-engineering skills needed to turn a lab process into a factory process. It is offered by IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi (as Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology) and a few Kerala colleges.

B.Tech UG 4 years (8 semesters); some IITs allow conversion to a dual degree
Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering

What is BT & BCE?

Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering is a hybrid branch. The biotechnology half teaches how cells, genes and proteins work and how to modify them. The biochemical-engineering half teaches transport phenomena, thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, bioreactor design and downstream processing: the maths and design skills that let you grow cells in a 10,000-litre tank and purify a drug from the broth.

How it differs: a plain Biotechnology B.Tech usually has more lab biology and less engineering design; a pure Biochemical Engineering B.Tech (as at IIT BHU) is closer to chemical engineering with a bio focus; Biomedical Engineering is a different field about medical devices. This combined branch sits in the middle, which suits students who want to work on process development and scale-up in biopharma and bio-manufacturing.

At IIT Kharagpur the programme runs in the Department of Biotechnology; at IIT Delhi it is the B.Tech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology (JoSAA lists it as Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering). In Kerala, colleges such as Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering offer a B.Tech with the same name through KEAM.

Who is this course for?

  • JEE aspirants who like Biology as much as Chemistry and Maths
  • Students who want to design and scale up processes, not only run experiments
  • Those aiming for process development roles in vaccines, biosimilars and enzymes
  • Students comfortable with mass transfer, kinetics and numerical problem-solving
  • Those who may later do an MS or PhD in bioprocess or synthetic biology
  • Students who want a bio degree that still opens chemical and process jobs

Eligibility & admission

  • Class 12 (10+2) pass with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or another permitted subject.
  • AICTE minimum: 45% aggregate in these subjects (40% for reserved categories in most states); many colleges ask for more.
  • IITs, NITs, IIITs and other JoSAA institutes also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
  • No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows two attempts in consecutive years. Check each state CET for its own rules.
  • At IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi you must qualify JEE Advanced and secure a seat through JoSAA; Kerala colleges admit through the KEAM rank list.

How admission works

  1. Keep Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11–12 (Biology as an extra helps).
  2. Write JEE Main and qualify for JEE Advanced; recent JoSAA closing ranks for this branch at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi have been roughly in the 4,500–8,000 range (open, gender-neutral), varying by year and round.
  3. Fill the branch in JoSAA choices, or register for KEAM counselling (CEE Kerala) for Kerala colleges.
  4. Accept the seat, pay the seat-acceptance fee and upload Class 10/12 marksheets and category certificates.
  5. Report to the institute for verification and registration.

Salary

IIT graduates in this branch typically receive ₹6–15 LPA (approx.) in their first job; the higher offers often come from analytics, consulting or tech roles rather than core biotech. Core biopharma process roles usually start around ₹5–9 LPA (approx.). Graduates of other colleges commonly start at ₹3–5 LPA.

An MS or PhD substantially raises pay in R&D: senior scientists and process managers with 8–10 years' experience can earn ₹20 LPA or more. Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

India's biologics, biosimilar and vaccine industry needs engineers who understand both cells and process equipment, because the hardest part of making a new biologic is reliable large-scale manufacturing. The BioE3 policy and new bio-manufacturing hubs are adding demand for people who can design and run such plants.

Because the course is quantitative, graduates also stay employable in chemicals, energy and data roles, which makes it one of the more flexible bio branches.

After this course

  • MS/PhD abroad in chemical, biochemical or bioengineering
  • M.Tech via GATE (Biotechnology or Chemical)
  • Dual degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) where the IIT allows conversion
  • MBA for pharma or healthcare business
  • PhD at IISc or IITs with fellowships

BT & BCE FAQs

How is Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering different from plain Biotechnology?

It adds a full set of chemical-engineering subjects (transport phenomena, reaction engineering, bioreactor design). Plain Biotechnology courses usually spend more time on lab biology and less on engineering design.

Which colleges offer this exact branch?

IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi are the best known, both through JEE Advanced. In Kerala, Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering and Sree Buddha College of Engineering offer it through KEAM.

Do I need Biology in Class 12 for this branch at IITs?

No. IITs require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; Biology is taught from the basics in the first and second years.

What JEE Advanced rank is needed?

In recent years the open-category closing ranks at IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur have been roughly 4,500–8,000, but this changes every year. Check the latest JoSAA round-wise data.

Can I switch to a chemical or process job later?

Yes. The strong chemical-engineering core makes graduates suitable for process roles in chemicals, food and energy as well as biotech.
