What is BSBE?
Biological Sciences and Bioengineering is an interdisciplinary branch built around research. The first year is common with other IIT branches; after that you study biochemistry, genetics, cell and molecular biology and biophysics, along with bioengineering subjects such as biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, bio-imaging, systems biology and computational biology. Many students do research projects in labs from the second or third year.
How it differs: Biotechnology programmes focus on products and bioprocesses; Biochemical Engineering on plant design and scale-up; Biomedical Engineering on medical devices. BSBE is broader and more science-heavy, touching all three, which makes it a strong base for MS/PhD, research careers and deep-tech startups but less directly tied to one industry.
The name varies by institute: IIT Kanpur calls it Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee call it Biosciences and Bioengineering, and IIT Jodhpur offers B.Tech Bioengineering. Check JoSAA for the exact programme names each year.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (10+2) pass with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or another permitted subject.
- AICTE minimum: 45% aggregate in these subjects (40% for reserved categories in most states); many colleges ask for more.
- IITs, NITs, IIITs and other JoSAA institutes also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows two attempts in consecutive years. Check each state CET for its own rules.
- Admission is only through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling; Biology in Class 12 is not required.
- IIT Kanpur also offers a double major in BSBE for students already admitted to other branches.
How admission works
- Take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11–12.
- Write JEE Main (both sessions if possible) and qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Write JEE Advanced and register for JoSAA counselling.
- Place BSBE / Biosciences and Bioengineering at the IITs you prefer in your choice list; recent open-category closing ranks have been roughly 9,000–16,000 at IIT Guwahati, depending on year and round.
- Accept the seat, pay the fee, upload documents and report to the IIT.

Careers & salary
Research Scientist (after MS/PhD)Leads research in academia, national labs or biotech R&D.
Computational Biologist / Bioinformatics ScientistUses code and models to analyse genomic, protein or clinical data.
Biomaterials or Tissue EngineerDevelops scaffolds, implants and engineered tissues.
Drug Discovery AssociateWorks on screening and characterising new drug candidates.

Salary
BSBE graduates who take campus placements typically get ₹6–15 LPA (approx.), many in analytics, consulting or software rather than core biology. Core biotech roles straight after B.Tech usually pay ₹5–9 LPA (approx.).
A large share of students go for MS or PhD, often with fellowships or stipends abroad. After a PhD, industry scientist roles in India commonly start at ₹12–25 LPA (approx.). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Modern biology is increasingly quantitative: genomics, protein design, cell therapy and brain research all need people who understand both biology and engineering. India is funding this through the BioE3 policy, the Genome India project and new bio-foundries, and IIT research parks are incubating bio and health-tech startups.
Pure B.Tech placements in core biology are limited, so the branch pays off most for students who plan on research, higher studies or entrepreneurship, or who build strong computational skills.
After this course
- MS/PhD abroad in bioengineering, neuroscience or computational biology
- Direct PhD at IISc, IITs, NCBS or TIFR
- M.Tech via GATE (BT) or M.Sc via JAM
- MBA in healthcare or life-science management
- Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) routes for PhD
BSBE FAQs
What is BSBE at IIT Kanpur?
It is the four-year B.Tech in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, offered through JEE Advanced. It mixes core biology with bioengineering and has a strong research focus.
Is BSBE the same as Biotechnology?
Not exactly. BSBE is broader and more research oriented, covering biology, biomaterials, imaging and computation, while Biotechnology focuses more on bioprocesses and products.
Can I join BSBE without Biology in Class 12?
Yes. IITs require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Biology is taught from the beginning, though you will need to put in extra effort early on.
Are placements good in BSBE?
Many students get good offers, but often in analytics, consulting or software. Core biology jobs are fewer at B.Tech level, so many graduates go for MS or PhD.
Which IITs offer Biosciences and Bioengineering?
IIT Kanpur (as BSBE), IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee (Biosciences and Bioengineering), IIT Jodhpur (Bioengineering) and IIT (BHU) (bioengineering dual degree). IIT Madras has a related Biological Engineering B.Tech.
