What is Textile Engg.?
India is one of the world's largest textile producers and exporters, from cotton yarn to ready garments. Textile Engineering trains engineers to run and improve that chain: making natural and synthetic fibres, spinning yarn, weaving and knitting fabric, then dyeing, printing and finishing it to the right quality and cost.
Students study fibre science and polymer chemistry, yarn and fabric manufacturing, textile machinery, chemical processing, testing and quality control, and production management. Modern programmes add technical textiles (geotextiles, medical, protective and automotive fabrics), nonwovens, composites and sustainability.
Different colleges use names such as Textile Technology, Textile Chemistry, Man-made Fibre Technology or Fibres and Textile Processing Technology. Compared with Fashion Technology, which focuses on garment production and merchandising, Textile Engineering concentrates on fibre, yarn and fabric manufacture and materials science.

Salary
Most freshers start at about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.) in mills, processing units and buying houses; IIT Delhi graduates often get higher offers including non-core roles. With 5–10 years of experience in production, quality or merchandising, salaries commonly reach ₹8–18 LPA (approx.).
Pay depends on the company size, location (many mills are in smaller towns), specialisation in technical textiles or processing, and export exposure. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
The government is backing textiles through PM MITRA mega textile parks, the PLI scheme for man-made fibres and technical textiles, and the National Technical Textiles Mission. These programmes aim to build large, modern plants and increase exports, which needs engineers trained in automation, quality and new materials.
Technical textiles for health care, defence, infrastructure and vehicles are among the fastest-growing segments, and global brands now demand traceable, low-carbon and recycled materials. Graduates who combine textile knowledge with sustainability, data or composites skills have good prospects in 2026.
