What is Chem. & Polymer Engg.?
Chemical and Polymer Engineering takes the chemical engineering toolkit (thermodynamics, transport, reaction engineering) and applies it to polymers. You learn how monomers are polymerised in reactors, how molecular structure decides strength, flexibility and heat resistance, and how granules become products through extrusion, injection moulding, blow moulding and film casting.
Be aware of the naming: a B.Tech titled exactly 'Chemical and Polymer Engineering' is rare in India. You will usually find the same content as Polymer Engineering and Technology (ICT Mumbai), Polymer Science and Engineering (CUSAT), Polymer Engineering (MIT-WPU, Crescent), or a Chemical Engineering degree with a polymer/plastics specialisation (for example at CIPET Bihta under Bihar Engineering University, and RGIPT). Check the exact programme name on the college's official site before applying.
Compared with plain Chemical Engineering, this course goes deeper into materials, product design and moulding, and less into refinery-scale operations. Compared with Textile Engineering, it covers all polymer products, not only fibres.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry; Chemistry is strongly recommended and required by most colleges for this branch.
- Minimum marks usually 45% in PCM for general category and 40% for reserved categories (AICTE norm); individual colleges may ask for more.
- For NITs, IIITs and other JoSAA institutes: 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a top-20 percentile rank in your board. IITs apply the same rule along with JEE Advanced.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows only two consecutive attempts and has a birth-date cut-off.
- Some institutes (e.g. CUSAT) run their own entrance tests; check each college's prospectus.
- Diploma holders in Plastics, Polymer or Chemical Engineering may get lateral entry to Year 2 in state universities.
How admission works
- Confirm which colleges offer the programme and under what exact name (Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, or Chemical Engineering with polymer specialisation).
- Write the exam each college uses: JEE Main, MHT CET, CUSAT CAT, JEE Advanced (RGIPT) or an institute test.
- Register for the relevant counselling: JoSAA/CSAB, Maharashtra CAP, CUSAT, or the college's own process.
- Fill choices, accept the allotted seat and pay the fee.
- Verify documents and report to the college.

Salary
Freshers usually start at ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.); graduates of ICT Mumbai and similar top institutes can see higher offers from large petrochemical and FMCG companies. With 5–8 years in process, product or technical-service roles, salaries of ₹10–20 LPA (approx.) are common.
Pay depends on the employer (large petrochemical firms and multinationals pay more than small moulding units), on design and simulation skills, and on a master's degree for R&D roles. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India is one of the fastest-growing plastics and polymer markets in the world, driven by packaging, automobiles, construction, electronics and agriculture. Large petrochemical expansions by Reliance, IOCL, GAIL and others need engineers who understand both chemical processes and polymer products.
In 2026, the strongest growth areas are recycled and biodegradable plastics (driven by plastic waste rules and extended producer responsibility), lightweight composites for EVs and aerospace, and specialty polymers for batteries and medical devices. Because seats are limited and the field is niche, good graduates are noticed easily, but jobs are concentrated in industrial clusters.
After this course

- M.Tech in Plastics Engineering at CIPET
- MS/PhD in polymer or materials science abroad
- MBA for operations, supply chain or marketing
- PhD at ICT Mumbai, IITs or CSIR-NCL Pune
Chem. & Polymer Engg. FAQs
Is Chemical and Polymer Engineering offered under this exact name?
Rarely. Most Indian colleges offer it as Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, or Chemical Engineering with a polymer specialisation. The content is similar, so compare the syllabus, not just the title.
Is Polymer Engineering better than Chemical Engineering?
Chemical Engineering is broader and safer for most students. Polymer Engineering is a good choice if you are sure you want plastics, rubber, coatings or composites, and it gives an edge in those industries.
Which is the best college for polymer engineering in India?
ICT Mumbai is widely regarded as the leading institute for polymer engineering. CUSAT, MIT-WPU and CIPET-linked programmes are other options; check each college's current placements.
What is the salary after polymer engineering?
Freshers typically earn about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.), rising to ₹10–20 LPA with experience. Top institute graduates and those joining large petrochemical firms earn more.
Can I do M.Tech after polymer engineering?
Yes. You can take GATE for M.Tech in polymer, chemical or materials engineering at IITs and other institutes, or study at CIPET. MS abroad in materials science is also common.
