Mechanical, Automation & Manufacturing

Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE)

Make factories and supply chains faster, leaner and better at what they produce

Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) is a four-year B.Tech/B.E. programme that combines core mechanical engineering with the science of running production systems well. Students learn how products are manufactured and how to improve cost, quality, productivity and safety across factories, warehouses and service operations.

B.Tech / B.E. UG 4 years (8 semesters); 3 years for diploma holders via lateral entry
Industrial and Production Engineering

What is IPE?

Industrial and Production Engineering sits between mechanical engineering and management. The production side covers how parts are made: casting, machining, welding, forming, CNC and additive manufacturing. The industrial side asks how a whole system should run: where machines go, how work is scheduled, how much stock to hold and how quality is controlled.

Along with mechanics, materials and machine design, you study operations research, work study, quality engineering, supply chain management and data-driven decision making. Lab work usually includes machine shops, metrology, CAD/CAM and simulation of production lines.

Compared with a plain Mechanical Engineering degree, IPE puts less weight on thermal and fluid subjects and more on manufacturing processes, optimisation and the economics of production. That makes it a natural path into operations, consulting and supply-chain roles as well as shop-floor engineering.

Who is this course for?

  • Those who enjoy maths, statistics and optimisation more than pure theory
  • People curious about how cars, phones or medicines are mass-produced
  • Students who see themselves moving into operations, supply chain or management later

  • Lateral entry into Year 2 is available for diploma holders in mechanical/production engineering at many state and private colleges.

How admission works

  1. Take JEE Main (and JEE Advanced if you are aiming for IITs) or your state CET.
  2. Register for JoSAA/CSAB counselling for IITs and NITs, or state counselling (e.g. MHT CET CAP, KCET, TNEA, HSTES) for state colleges.
  3. Fill choices carefully: the branch may be listed as Industrial and Production, Production and Industrial, or Production Engineering.
  4. Accept the seat allotted and pay the seat-acceptance fee.
  5. Report to the institute with Class 10/12 marksheets, rank card, category and domicile certificates for verification.
  6. Private universities may admit through their own test or merit; check AICTE approval before paying.

Salary

Freshers from mid-level colleges typically start around ₹3.5–6 LPA (approx.), while strong NIT and IIT graduates often get ₹7–15 LPA (approx.), especially in operations analytics and consulting roles. With 5–8 years of experience, plant managers, supply-chain leads and senior industrial engineers commonly earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.).

Pay rises fastest for those who add data skills (Python, SQL, simulation), Six Sigma certification or an MBA in operations. Core manufacturing jobs in smaller towns may pay less at the start but offer quick responsibility. Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

India's push for domestic manufacturing under schemes such as Make in India and production-linked incentives (PLI) for electronics, automobiles, EV components and pharmaceuticals is creating many new plants that need engineers to design, run and improve production. At the same time, e-commerce and quick-commerce companies hire industrial engineers for warehouses, routing and capacity planning.

In 2026 the field is moving towards smart factories: sensors, digital twins, automation and data analytics. IPE graduates who combine shop-floor knowledge with data and automation skills are well placed for both core manufacturing and fast-growing operations roles.

  • MS in Industrial Engineering or Operations Research abroad (US, Germany)
  • Postgraduate operations and industrial engineering programmes at IIM Mumbai (formerly NITIE)
  • PhD in manufacturing, operations research or quality engineering
  • Engineering Services Examination (ESE) or PSU recruitment via GATE

IPE FAQs

Is Industrial and Production Engineering the same as Mechanical Engineering?

It shares the first two years with mechanical engineering but then focuses on manufacturing processes, operations research, quality and supply chain. Mechanical engineering goes deeper into thermal, fluid and design subjects.

Which entrance exam do I need for IPE?

JEE Main is the main route for NITs, DTU and many state colleges, and JEE Advanced for IIT Roorkee. Several states also admit through their own CETs or Class 12 merit.

Can IPE graduates get software or analytics jobs?

Yes. Operations research, statistics and optimisation make IPE graduates a good fit for supply-chain analytics and business analyst roles, especially if they learn Python and SQL.

Is IPE good for government jobs?

Graduates can take GATE for PSU recruitment and the Engineering Services Examination under the mechanical stream. Many railway and defence production units also hire production engineers.

Should I do an MBA after Industrial and Production Engineering?

An MBA in operations or supply chain is a common and well-paid path for IPE graduates. Many work for 2–3 years first, which helps both admission and placements.

What is the difference between Production Engineering and Industrial Engineering?

Production engineering focuses on how products are physically made, while industrial engineering focuses on how the overall system of people, machines and materials is organised. Most Indian IPE programmes cover both.
