What is B.FTech?
Behind every shirt in a shop is a factory that cuts, stitches, finishes and ships thousands of pieces on time and to exact quality. Fashion Technology trains professionals to plan and run that work. It is about how garments are engineered and produced, not only how they look.
At NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology, set up under the Ministry of Textiles), the degree is the B.FTech in Apparel Production. It covers pattern making, garment construction, apparel machinery, production planning, industrial engineering, quality assurance, CAD/CAM, ERP and supply chain management. Engineering colleges, mainly in Tamil Nadu, offer a similar B.Tech Fashion Technology through state counselling.
Compared with B.Des Fashion Design, Fashion Technology is more technical and needs PCM. Compared with Textile Engineering, it starts where fabric ends: turning fabric into garments and managing apparel factories and sourcing.

Scope & higher studies
India is among the world's largest garment exporters, and government initiatives such as PM MITRA textile parks and the PLI scheme for textiles and apparel are encouraging larger, more modern factories. As buyers move sourcing towards India, demand is growing for professionals who can run efficient, compliant and traceable production.
Online fashion retail, quick-turnaround collections, automation and sustainability reporting are changing how apparel is made. Graduates who understand both factory processes and digital tools such as CAD, PLM and data analytics are well placed in 2026.
