What is Agri Engg.?
Agricultural Engineering sits where engineering meets the farm. Its goal is to raise yields and farm incomes while using less water, labour, fuel and land. The degree is offered mainly by state agricultural universities (SAUs) and their colleges of agricultural engineering, many of which follow the ICAR model syllabus.
You study four core areas: farm machinery and power (tractors, harvesters, precision equipment), soil and water conservation engineering (watersheds, irrigation and drainage), processing and food engineering (drying, storage, milling) and renewable energy (biogas, solar dryers and pumps). Newer electives cover drones, GIS, sensors and farm automation.
Unlike B.Sc Agriculture, which focuses on crops, soils and agronomy, this is an engineering degree with heavy mathematics, mechanics and design. Compared with Mechanical or Civil Engineering, every subject is applied to rural and food-production problems.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; English usually compulsory.
- Minimum marks are typically 50% aggregate for general candidates and 40% for SC/ST/PwD; some states set different cut-offs.
- For ICAR counselling seats you must appear in CUET-UG with the subject combination ICAR prescribes; minimum age is usually 16 years.
- Most state seats need the state entrance test and, in some cases, state domicile.
- Diploma holders in agricultural engineering may get lateral entry in a few states; check the university prospectus.
How admission works
- Check which route your target university uses: ICAR quota via CUET-UG, a state CET, or JEE Main
- Register and appear for CUET-UG and/or your state entrance test in the April–June window
- Register for ICAR online counselling or state counselling after results and fill college choices
- Accept the allotted seat and pay the seat-acceptance fee online
- Report to the university with mark sheets, category, domicile and medical certificates for verification

Salary
Freshers in tractor, irrigation and agri-business companies usually start at about ₹3–6 LPA (approx.); IIT and top SAU graduates in large firms can get more. With 5–8 years in design, sales management or project roles, pay often reaches ₹8–15 LPA (approx.).
Government jobs (state agricultural engineer, bank officer, ICAR scientist) follow pay-commission scales and add job security and allowances. Pay depends on the college, location, specialisation and whether you add an M.Tech or MBA. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India still has low farm mechanisation compared with developed countries, and rising labour costs are pushing farmers towards machines, custom-hiring centres and precision tools. Government schemes for drip irrigation, farm machinery subsidies, drones (such as the Namo Drone Didi scheme) and food processing keep demand steady for trained engineers.
Climate change and falling groundwater levels make water-saving irrigation and watershed work more important every year. Agri-tech start-ups, solar pump programmes and the cold-chain sector are also creating new roles, especially for graduates who add data, GIS or automation skills.

Agri Engg. FAQs
Is Agricultural Engineering the same as B.Sc Agriculture?
No. B.Sc Agriculture is a science degree on crops, soils and farm management. Agricultural Engineering is a B.Tech with mathematics and design, focused on machines, water systems and processing.
Can I get admission through CUET-UG?
Yes. ICAR fills its share of seats in many agricultural universities through CUET-UG scores and its own online counselling. The remaining seats are filled through state entrance tests or merit, so check each university's rules.
Is Biology required for Agricultural Engineering?
Generally no. Most universities require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and some also accept PCMB. Students with only PCB usually go for B.Sc Agriculture instead.
Are government jobs available after this course?
Yes. State agriculture and water departments, public-sector banks, NABARD and ICAR recruit agricultural engineers. Many posts need a separate competitive exam.
Which GATE paper should I take for M.Tech?
Agricultural engineering graduates normally take the GATE Agricultural Engineering (AG) paper. ICAR's AIEEA-PG is another route for admission to postgraduate programmes in agricultural universities.
Is there scope for private-sector jobs?
Yes. Tractor and implement makers, irrigation companies, food processors and agri-tech start-ups hire graduates, especially those with design or automation skills.
