What is Dairy Tech?
India produces more milk than any other country, and most of it moves through cooperative and private dairies that need trained technologists. The B.Tech in Dairy Technology teaches how milk is collected, tested, chilled, pasteurised and turned into dozens of products, and how dairy plants are designed and run hygienically.
Core areas are dairy chemistry and microbiology, dairy engineering (heat exchangers, homogenisers, evaporators, spray dryers, refrigeration), dairy products technology (cheese, fermented milks, ice cream, traditional sweets), quality assurance and dairy economics. Students spend time in experimental dairies and a commercial plant.
Dairy Technology is a specialised branch of food technology. Compared with Food Technology, it goes much deeper into milk and milk products. Compared with veterinary or animal science degrees, it begins after the milk leaves the farm and focuses on processing rather than animal health.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and English (NDRI's stated requirement); some state colleges also accept Biology in place of Mathematics.
- Minimum 50% aggregate for general candidates and 40% for SC/ST/PwD at ICAR institutes; state colleges may differ.
- For NDRI Karnal and ICAR-quota seats: appear in CUET-UG and register for ICAR online counselling.
- State seats usually need the state test (e.g., GUJCET in Gujarat, KCET in Karnataka) and state domicile.
How admission works
- Decide on target institutes: NDRI and ICAR-quota seats (CUET-UG) or state dairy colleges (state test)
- Apply for and write CUET-UG and/or the state entrance exam
- Register on the ICAR counselling portal or the state admission portal and fill choices
- Accept the allotted seat and pay the seat fee online
- Report to the college with documents and a medical certificate

Salary
Freshers in cooperatives and private dairies usually start at about ₹3.5–6 LPA (approx.); NDRI graduates and those joining multinationals or NDDB often get more. Plant managers and quality heads with 8–12 years of experience can earn ₹10–20 LPA (approx.).
Government and cooperative roles follow fixed scales with allowances, while private and multinational firms pay more for strong technical and management skills. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India has been the world's top milk producer for decades, but only part of its milk is handled by the organised sector. Programmes under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, such as the National Programme for Dairy Development and the Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund, are expanding chilling, processing and testing capacity, which needs trained dairy technologists.
Value-added products such as cheese, whey protein, probiotic drinks and packaged traditional sweets are growing fast, and exports are rising. Graduates who combine dairy science with automation, quality systems and management skills have strong prospects in 2026.
After this course
- M.Tech in Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Chemistry or Microbiology (ICAR AIEEA-PG / university tests)
- M.Tech in Food Technology via GATE
- MBA in Agri-business or Dairy Management (e.g., IRMA Anand)
- MS abroad in Dairy or Food Science
- PhD and ICAR scientist recruitment
Dairy Tech FAQs
Is it Dairy Technology or Diary Technology?
The correct name is Dairy Technology, which relates to milk and milk products. 'Diary' is a common misspelling.
How do I get admission to NDRI Karnal for B.Tech Dairy Technology?
Appear in CUET-UG with the subjects ICAR prescribes and then register for ICAR online counselling. NDRI fills its B.Tech seats through this process.
Can Biology students take Dairy Technology?
NDRI requires Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. Some state colleges accept Biology in place of Mathematics, so check each prospectus.
What jobs can I get after Dairy Technology?
Graduates work as dairy technologists, quality officers, plant engineers and production managers. Cooperatives like Amul, private dairies and food multinationals are major employers.
Is Dairy Technology a good career?
Yes, the industry is large and stable because milk is consumed daily across India. Pay starts modestly but grows well with plant and management experience.
