What is EE (Electronics) / ELX?
Electronics Engineering studies how electronic components behave and how to combine them into useful circuits and systems: amplifiers, power supplies, processors, sensors, measuring instruments and the chips inside them. It is a hardware-first branch.
Core subjects include semiconductor devices, network analysis, analog and digital circuits, microprocessors, control systems, power electronics, instrumentation and VLSI. Communication is usually taught at an introductory level rather than in depth. In recent years AICTE has also approved a newer variant, Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology), which several colleges now offer.
How it differs from close alternatives: ECE and ETE spend more semesters on communication systems, antennas and networks. EEE (Electrical and Electronics) adds heavy-current topics such as electrical machines and power systems. Electronics Engineering sits in between, centred on circuits and chips. At Mumbai University-affiliated colleges and VJTI, “Electronics” and “Electronics and Telecommunication” are offered as separate branches with exactly this split.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry or another allowed subject (AICTE norms).
- Minimum aggregate generally 45% (40% for reserved categories); higher at many private universities.
- For IIT (BHU) and other JoSAA institutes: 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or top 20 percentile of the board.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main.
- Diploma holders in electronics may enter the second year through lateral entry where offered.
How admission works
- Take JEE Main/JEE Advanced, your state CET (e.g. MHT CET) or the university's own test.
- Register for JoSAA (IIT BHU and other central institutes) or state counselling (e.g. Maharashtra CAP for VJTI).
- Fill choices; note that the same college may list Electronics, ECE and E&TC separately.
- Accept the allotted seat and pay the fee.
- Report with documents for verification.

Salary
Freshers in core electronics roles typically start around ₹4–9 LPA (approx.); semiconductor design firms pay more to strong candidates from top institutes. Manufacturing and quality roles may start nearer ₹3–5 LPA (approx.). Many graduates also take IT jobs at standard fresher packages.
With 5–8 years of experience, chip-design and embedded engineers commonly earn ₹12–35 LPA (approx.). VLSI tool skills, an M.Tech, and working for a design company rather than a manufacturer usually increase pay. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Electronics Engineering is closely tied to India's semiconductor and electronics manufacturing push. In 2026 new fabrication, assembly and testing plants, plus a growing number of chip-design centres, are increasing demand for engineers who understand devices and circuits. Electric vehicles, defence electronics and consumer-device manufacturing add further roles.
The branch is narrower than ECE in terms of telecom jobs but well suited to the hardware side of the industry. Students should build practical skills in circuit design tools, HDL and embedded programming during the course.
After this course
- M.Tech in VLSI, Microelectronics or Embedded Systems via GATE (EC or IN paper)
- MS abroad in Electrical Engineering
- UPSC Engineering Services (E&T)
- PSU recruitment through GATE
- MBA via CAT
- PhD in semiconductor devices or circuits
EE (Electronics) / ELX FAQs
Is Electronics Engineering the same as ECE?
They overlap a lot, but Electronics Engineering focuses more on devices, circuits and chips, while ECE spends more time on communication systems like wireless, antennas and networks.
Is Electronics Engineering the same as Electrical Engineering?
No. Electrical Engineering deals with power generation, machines and transmission (high voltage). Electronics Engineering deals with low-power circuits, chips and signals.
What is Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design and Technology)?
It is a newer AICTE-approved variant with extra chip-design subjects. It suits students who are already sure they want a semiconductor career.
Which GATE paper can I take?
Most Electronics Engineering graduates take GATE EC; some take Instrumentation (IN) depending on their interest.
Can I get software jobs after Electronics Engineering?
Yes. IT companies generally allow electronics branches in campus placements, but you need to learn programming and data structures well.
