What is EDM?
Most ECE programmes teach you how circuits and chips work. Electronics Engineering – Design and Manufacturing goes one step further and asks how a working circuit becomes a reliable, manufacturable product. Alongside analog and digital electronics, signals, communication, VLSI and embedded systems, you study multilayer PCB design and prototyping, electronic manufacturing and packaging, design for testability, and product design.
At IIITDM Kancheepuram (Chennai), where the branch is listed as Electronics Engineering (Design & Manufacturing), the curriculum adds design content from electrical, control and instrumentation engineering to a standard ECE base. IIITDM Kurnool offers a closely related B.Tech in ECE with a Design and Manufacturing specialisation.
How it differs from ECE: the core subjects and GATE options (EC paper) are the same, so you can follow any ECE career. The extra design and manufacturing courses suit you especially for hardware product companies, EMS (electronics manufacturing services) firms and India's new semiconductor packaging plants.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- For admission through JoSAA: 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- A valid JEE Main rank in the year of admission.
- Age: as per JEE Main rules (no upper age limit at present; check the current information bulletin).
How admission works
- Pass or appear in Class 12 with PCM.
- Write JEE Main (January and/or April session).
- Register in JoSAA counselling and fill choices including IIITDM Kancheepuram EDM and IIITDM Kurnool ECE (D&M).
- Accept a seat and pay the seat acceptance fee; join CSAB special rounds if needed.
- Report to the institute with documents and complete fee payment.

Salary
Freshers from IIITDMs commonly receive about ₹6–12 LPA (approx.), with chip-design and product companies paying at the top end and occasionally beyond. EMS and manufacturing roles start lower, around ₹4–7 LPA (approx.). After 5–8 years in VLSI or product design, ₹18–35 LPA is realistic.
Pay depends on your specialisation (VLSI pays most), internships, and the strength of your design projects. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India is building its first large semiconductor fabs and chip-packaging (ATMP/OSAT) plants under the India Semiconductor Mission, and production-linked incentives have pushed phone, laptop and component manufacturing into the country. These need engineers who understand both electronics and how products are made at scale, which is exactly the gap this branch targets.
The degree is new and offered at few places, but its core is ECE, so graduates are not limited to manufacturing jobs.
