What is ETE / E&TC / EXTC?
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering teaches how electronic hardware is used to build communication systems: telephone exchanges and switching, mobile networks, broadband and fibre-optic links, satellite communication and the signal processing that makes them work.
You study electronic devices, analog and digital circuits, network theory, signals and systems, electromagnetics, analog and digital communication, microprocessors, DSP and microwave engineering, then move to electives such as wireless and mobile networks, optical communication, VLSI and embedded systems.
The honest comparison with ECE: for most students, ETE and ECE are interchangeable. University of Mumbai, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Jadavpur use the ETE/E&TC name for what most other states call ECE. Some syllabi give slightly more time to telecom switching, networks and data communication, but both branches take the same GATE EC paper, are eligible for the same PSU and UPSC ESE (E&T) posts, and are recruited for the same jobs. Choose based on the college, not the name.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (state exams like MHT CET and WBJEE are PCM-based).
- Minimum marks for Maharashtra and most states: around 45% in PCM for general category and 40% for reserved categories (check the current state brochure).
- IIEST Shibpur and other JoSAA institutes: 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or top 20 percentile of the board.
- Domicile rules apply to state quota seats; all-India quota seats are open via JEE Main.
- Diploma holders can join the second year through Direct Second Year (DSE) / lateral entry admissions.
How admission works
- Appear for MHT CET (Maharashtra), WBJEE (West Bengal), JEE Main, or a university test.
- Register for the state Centralised Admission Process (CAP) or WBJEE counselling, or JoSAA for IIEST Shibpur.
- Fill preferences; search for both “E&TC/EXTC” and “ECE” names on the list.
- Accept the allotted seat and complete document verification.
- Pay fees and report to the college before the deadline.

Salary
ETE graduates are paid in line with ECE graduates from similar colleges. Telecom operators and IT services firms usually start freshers at about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.). Semiconductor and networking-product companies offer roughly ₹7–18 LPA (approx.) to strong candidates from top colleges.
Mid-career (5–8 years) engineers in networking, RF or chip design often earn ₹12–30 LPA (approx.). College reputation, specialised skills and an M.Tech make the biggest difference. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Telecom in India continues to expand in 2026 with 5G densification, fibre-to-the-home, satellite broadband and research towards 6G under the Bharat 6G mission. The government's push for domestic telecom and electronics manufacturing is adding jobs in equipment design and production, not only in network operations.
As with ECE, core roles reward strong fundamentals and specialised skills, while many graduates also choose software careers. The branch remains a solid choice wherever it is offered at a good college.
After this course
- M.Tech in Communication, VLSI or Signal Processing via GATE (EC paper)
- UPSC Engineering Services (Electronics and Telecommunication)
- PSU jobs through GATE
- MS abroad in Electrical/Telecommunication Engineering
- MBA via CAT, including telecom management programmes
- PhD in wireless or optical communication
ETE / E&TC / EXTC FAQs
Is ETE the same as ECE?
In practice, almost. The syllabi overlap heavily, both take GATE EC, and employers treat them as equivalent. ETE may include a little more telecom switching and networks.
Why do Maharashtra colleges call it E&TC or EXTC?
It is a naming tradition of Mumbai and Pune universities. E&TC and EXTC both mean Electronics and Telecommunication.
Can I write UPSC ESE after ETE?
Yes. The Engineering Services Examination has an Electronics and Telecommunication stream for which this degree is eligible.
Is ETE good for software jobs?
Yes, most IT companies allow ETE in campus placements. You should build programming skills and projects alongside your core subjects.
Should I choose ETE at a top college or CSE at a weaker college?
Many students do well with ETE at a strong college because of better faculty, peers and placements. Compare each college's actual placement data before deciding.
