What is ECM / ENC / ELC?
Electronics and Computer Engineering (often abbreviated ECM, ENC or ELC depending on the college) sits between ECE and CSE. You learn analog and digital electronics, microprocessors and VLSI from the electronics side, and data structures, algorithms, operating systems and databases from the computing side.
The aim is an engineer who can design a circuit board, program the microcontroller on it and connect it to software in the cloud. That makes it a natural fit for embedded systems, IoT, robotics and semiconductor design, while still keeping software jobs open.
How it differs from close alternatives: compared with ECE, several communication-theory courses (electromagnetics, RF, analog and digital communication) are replaced by computer-science courses. Amrita, for example, describes its programme this way. Compared with CSE, you study more circuits and hardware and fewer advanced CS electives. The branch is offered mainly by private and deemed universities; most IITs and NITs do not run it under this exact name.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology or another allowed subject (AICTE norms).
- Minimum aggregate typically 45–60% depending on the university (lower for reserved categories where reservation applies); for example, Thapar lists 60% in the relevant subjects.
- Valid score in the university's accepted exam (JEE Main or its own test).
- Some universities admit diploma holders into the second year; check each institute.
How admission works
- Check which exam your target university uses: VITEEE, SRMJEEE, Amrita AEEE, MET, KIITEE or JEE Main.
- Apply and sit for that exam (many universities run several slots or phases).
- Take part in the university's own counselling or merit-based seat allotment.
- Pay the admission fee to confirm your seat.
- Report with mark sheets, scorecard and identity documents.

Salary
Graduates who join IT services firms usually start at about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.). Semiconductor, embedded and product companies typically offer ₹6–15 LPA (approx.) to strong candidates, especially those with VLSI or embedded projects.
With 5–8 years of experience, chip design and embedded engineers often earn ₹15–35 LPA (approx.). Specialised skills (verification, physical design, automotive software), the employer and the city change pay most. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India is investing heavily in semiconductor fabrication, chip design and electronics manufacturing in 2026, which increases demand for engineers who understand both hardware and software. Electric vehicles, smart devices, defence electronics and industrial IoT all need people who can work across that boundary.
Because the branch keeps core computing subjects, graduates can also move into software jobs if they choose. The main caution is that quality varies by college, so check the curriculum and labs before choosing.
After this course
- M.Tech in VLSI, Embedded Systems or CSE via GATE (EC or CS paper)
- MS abroad in Electrical and Computer Engineering
- MBA via CAT for technology management roles
- Semiconductor skilling programmes linked to the India Semiconductor Mission
- PhD in microelectronics, computer architecture or AI hardware
ECM / ENC / ELC FAQs
Is Electronics and Computer Engineering the same as ECE?
No. ECE focuses more on communication systems such as RF, antennas and wireless. Electronics and Computer Engineering replaces many of those with computer-science subjects like algorithms, operating systems and databases.
Can I get software jobs after this branch?
Yes. You study the core CS subjects that software interviews test, and most IT companies allow this branch in campus placements.
Which GATE paper should I take?
You can choose EC for electronics and VLSI-focused M.Tech programmes, or CS if you want to move fully into computing.
Why don't IITs list this branch?
Most IITs and NITs teach similar content under ECE, EE or CSE, sometimes with electives or minors. The exact name is more common in private and deemed universities.
Is this branch harder than CSE?
It can feel broader, because you must handle circuit theory and physics-heavy subjects as well as programming. Students who enjoy both usually manage well.
