What is E&ECE / EECE?
The name “Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering” dates from the early decades of Indian engineering education, when “electrical communication” meant telegraph, telephone and radio. IIT Kharagpur's department kept the name, while most other institutes now call the same field Electronics and Communication Engineering. Punjab Engineering College, for example, renamed its E&EC department to ECE.
The curriculum covers semiconductor devices, analog and digital circuits, signals and systems, electromagnetics, analog and digital communication, digital signal processing, microprocessors, VLSI, RF and microwave engineering, and wireless and optical communication, with electives in areas such as machine learning, embedded systems and image processing.
Honest comparison: E&ECE, ECE and ETE are effectively the same discipline under different names. The word “Electrical” here refers to electrical signals carrying information, not to power systems; if you want power generation, machines and grids, choose Electrical or EEE instead. At IIT Kharagpur the branch is distinct from its Electrical Engineering department, which covers power and control. What matters most is the institute, not the label.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- For IITs: at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
- Qualify JEE Main in the required top bracket to become eligible for JEE Advanced, then obtain a JEE Advanced rank.
- JEE Advanced has age and attempt limits (generally two attempts in consecutive years); check the current brochure.
- There is no lateral entry into IIT B.Tech programmes.
How admission works
- Take JEE Main and qualify for JEE Advanced.
- Write JEE Advanced and get a rank in the common rank list or your category list.
- Register on JoSAA and fill IIT Kharagpur's “Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering” in your choice list.
- Accept the seat after allotment, pay the seat-acceptance fee and upload documents.
- Report to IIT Kharagpur for physical verification and registration.

Salary
Because this branch is offered mainly at IIT Kharagpur, fresher packages are usually well above the national ECE average: roughly ₹10–25 LPA (approx.) for typical core and software offers, with some semiconductor, quant and international offers higher. Students who pursue core roles often take an M.Tech or MS first.
With 5–8 years of experience, engineers in chip design, wireless or ML typically earn ₹25–60 LPA (approx.). Specialisation, employer and further study drive the difference. Figures vary; check IIT Kharagpur's current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
The field behind this branch, electronics and communication, is central to India's 2026 priorities: the India Semiconductor Mission, domestic 5G/6G research, satellite communication and defence electronics. Graduates of a strong programme like IIT Kharagpur's are well placed for both core research-and-development roles and high-paying software and analytics jobs.
Since the name is rare, students should not assume it is a different or specialised career path; employers read it as ECE. The deciding factors are the depth of your fundamentals, projects and any postgraduate study.
After this course
- M.Tech / MS (by research) at IITs and IISc via GATE EC
- MS or PhD abroad in Electrical and Computer Engineering
- MBA via CAT, or management programmes at IIMs
- UPSC Engineering Services (E&T) or civil services
- Direct PhD in microelectronics, communications or signal processing
E&ECE / EECE FAQs
Is Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering different from ECE?
No, not in substance. It is IIT Kharagpur's historical name for the same discipline, with a curriculum covering devices, circuits, signals and communication. Employers and GATE treat it as ECE.
Does “Electrical” mean I study power systems?
No. Here it means electrical signals that carry information. Power systems and machines are taught in Electrical Engineering or EEE.
Which colleges offer this exact branch?
Currently it is mainly IIT Kharagpur. Other institutes teach the same content under the ECE or ETE name.
How do I get admission?
You need a JEE Advanced rank and must choose the branch during JoSAA counselling. You also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or a top-20-percentile board result.
Is this a good branch if I want a software job?
Yes. IIT Kharagpur graduates from this department are regularly hired for software, data and quant roles, although you should build programming skills alongside your core courses.
