What is AE / Auto Engg.?
Automobile Engineering covers the whole life of a vehicle: designing the chassis and body, choosing engines or electric motors, building transmissions, brakes, steering and suspension, testing for safety and emissions, mass-producing it in a plant, and servicing it on the road. Modern courses add vehicle electronics, battery and EV systems, and software tools for crash and aerodynamic simulation.
The first two years are close to Mechanical Engineering (mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, manufacturing). From the third year you take automobile-specific subjects such as automotive engines, chassis and transmission, vehicle dynamics, automotive electrical and electronics, and vehicle maintenance. Workshops with real engines and gearboxes, plus student projects like SAE BAJA or Formula Student, are a big part of learning.
Automobile vs Automotive Engineering: in India the two names are used almost interchangeably and their syllabi overlap heavily. Automobile Engineering is the older Indian title (Anna University, Manipal, PSG) and traditionally includes more on vehicle maintenance, workshop practice and transport; programmes titled Automotive Engineering are often newer and frame the subject around design, electronics, EVs and autonomy. Both lead to the same jobs and the same GATE paper (Mechanical, ME). Choose by college quality and syllabus, not by the name.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry/Biology/Computer Science/technical subject.
- AICTE minimum: 45% in these subjects (40% reserved); Tamil Nadu (TNEA) uses 45%/40% in Maths, Physics, Chemistry.
- Private universities set their own cut-offs (often 50–60% in PCM) with their entrance tests.
- No upper age limit for most state counselling or JEE Main.
- Lateral entry: diploma holders in Automobile/Mechanical can join the second year via state lateral-entry counselling.
How admission works
- Take JEE Main, your state CET, or private tests such as MET (Manipal) or SRMJEEE
- In Tamil Nadu, apply through TNEA, which ranks students on Class 12 marks

Salary
Freshers usually start at ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.) in OEMs, component suppliers and dealership groups; top institutes and R&D roles can offer more. With 5–8 years in design, testing or EV development, salaries of ₹8–18 LPA (approx.) are common, while service and dealership roles grow more slowly.
Pay rises with CAD/CAE and EV skills, motorsport project experience and internships at OEMs. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India is the world's third-largest car market and the largest two-wheeler producer, and it is shifting steadily toward electric and hybrid vehicles, stricter safety (Bharat NCAP) and emission norms. This keeps demand steady for engineers in design, testing, EV powertrains and quality, especially in hubs like Chennai, Pune, Gurugram-Manesar, Bengaluru and Sanand.
The auto industry is cyclical, and jobs depend on vehicle sales. Students who learn EV, electronics and simulation skills, and who can also apply for general mechanical roles, are best protected against slowdowns.
After this course
- M.Tech in Automobile/Automotive Engineering or EV technology via GATE (ME)
- M.Tech programmes run with ARAI Pune at partner universities
- MS abroad (Germany, UK, USA) in Automotive Engineering
- MBA in operations or automotive management
- PhD in powertrain, battery or vehicle dynamics research
AE / Auto Engg. FAQs
What is the difference between Automobile and Automotive Engineering?
In India they are largely the same course with different names. Automobile Engineering is the older title and often includes more maintenance and workshop content; Automotive programmes tend to stress design, electronics and EVs. Jobs and GATE paper are the same.
Is Automobile Engineering better than Mechanical?
Not better, just narrower. Mechanical keeps PSU and cross-industry options open, while Automobile suits students certain about a vehicle career.
Which GATE paper do automobile engineers take?
There is no separate automobile paper; graduates take GATE Mechanical Engineering (ME). Check each PSU notification for whether automobile is an accepted discipline.
Is there scope in EVs after Automobile Engineering?
Yes. Most updated syllabi include electric and hybrid vehicles, and EV makers hire automobile graduates for powertrain, battery packaging and testing roles.
Can I join student racing teams?
Most good colleges have SAE BAJA, Supra or Formula Bharat teams. These projects are highly valued by recruiters.
