What is Automotive Engg.?
Automotive Engineering looks at a vehicle as a complete system: structure and body, powertrain (engine, motor, battery), chassis, aerodynamics, safety and the growing layer of electronics and software that controls it. You learn mechanical fundamentals first, then topics such as vehicle dynamics, automotive aerodynamics, safety systems, vehicle body engineering, embedded systems and EV technology.
How it really differs from Automobile Engineering: the two courses share most of their content, and Indian recruiters treat them as the same. The differences are in emphasis and packaging. Programmes named Automotive Engineering are more often newer, set up as a specialisation within Mechanical Engineering (DTU's Mechanical with Automotive Engineering, VIT's Mechanical with specialisation in Automotive Engineering), and lean toward design, simulation, electronics, EVs and autonomy. Traditional Automobile Engineering programmes usually give more weight to engines, maintenance and workshop practice. Because many Automotive programmes are Mechanical degrees with a specialisation, they can be slightly safer for PSU and general mechanical jobs.
Read the syllabus of each college: the right choice depends on labs, industry tie-ups (for example with ARAI Pune) and placements, not the label.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry/Biology/Computer Science/technical subject.
- AICTE minimum: 45% (40% reserved). DTU via JAC Delhi follows these limits with a JEE Main rank.
- Private universities often require 50–60% in PCM plus their own test (e.g. VITEEE) or JEE Main score.
- No upper age limit for JEE Main.
- Lateral entry: diploma holders in Mechanical/Automobile can join the second year where the university allows it (DTU accepts lateral entry).
How admission works
- Take JEE Main and/or university tests such as VITEEE
- Register for JAC Delhi (DTU) or the university's own counselling
- Choose the Automotive Engineering or Mechanical (Automotive) programme
- Accept the seat, pay fees and upload documents
- Report to campus for verification
Entrance exams
JEE Mainfor DTU through JAC Delhi and many private universities
VITEEEfor VIT's Mechanical with Automotive specialisation
Manipal (MET)for Manipal University Jaipur's automotive programme
SRMJEEEfor SRM's automotive/automobile programmes
GATE (ME)for M.Tech in Automotive Engineering after graduation

Salary
Graduates typically start at ₹4–8 LPA (approx.), with engineering-services and R&D centres (vehicle software, CAE, EV) at the higher end. After 5–8 years, specialists in EV powertrains, ADAS or simulation often earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.).
Coding and electronics skills now make the biggest difference in pay for automotive engineers, along with internships and Formula Student or SAE project experience. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
The vehicle is becoming a computer on wheels. Indian OEMs and global R&D centres in Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad are hiring for EV platforms, battery systems, ADAS and software-defined vehicles, supported by EV incentives and new safety norms. This shift favours automotive programmes that mix mechanical depth with electronics and software.
The industry is still cyclical. Students who keep strong mechanical fundamentals while learning embedded systems, MATLAB/Simulink and Python will have the widest choice of roles in 2026 and beyond.
After this course
- M.Tech in Automotive Engineering/EV Technology via GATE (ME)
- Joint M.Tech programmes with ARAI Pune
- MS in Automotive Engineering abroad (Germany, USA, UK)
- MBA in operations or product management
- PhD in batteries, autonomy or vehicle dynamics
Automotive Engg. FAQs
Is Automotive Engineering the same as Automobile Engineering?
Mostly yes in India; the core subjects overlap and employers treat them alike. Automotive programmes tend to focus more on design, electronics and EVs, while Automobile programmes keep more engine and maintenance content.
Does DTU offer a separate automotive B.Tech?
DTU offers Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Automotive Engineering through JAC Delhi, so the degree is a Mechanical degree with automotive electives.
Is Automotive Engineering good for EV careers?
Yes. EV technology, batteries and power electronics are central electives, and EV companies actively hire from these programmes.
Can I do an MS abroad after Automotive Engineering?
Yes. Germany, the UK and the USA have well-known automotive master's programmes, and a mechanical-based degree meets their entry requirements.
Should I pick Automotive or Mechatronics?
Pick Automotive if you want to work specifically on vehicles. Pick Mechatronics if you are interested in automation, robots and smart machines across many industries.
Do automotive engineers get PSU jobs?
Where the degree is Mechanical Engineering with an automotive specialisation (as at DTU and VIT), graduates can usually apply for PSU posts that ask for Mechanical via GATE (ME). Always confirm the eligible disciplines in each notification.
