What is Mechatronics?
Mechatronics Engineering is built on the idea that most modern machines are mechanical bodies with electronic senses and a software brain. You learn to design the mechanism, choose sensors and actuators (motors, hydraulics, pneumatics), program microcontrollers and PLCs, and close the loop with control theory so the machine behaves as intended.
The course mixes subjects from three departments: mechanics, machine design and manufacturing from Mechanical; circuits, digital electronics and power electronics from Electronics/Electrical; and programming, embedded systems and increasingly machine learning from Computer Science. Project work such as building a robot arm, an AGV or a smart manufacturing cell is central.
How it differs from neighbours: Mechanical Engineering goes deeper into thermal and fluid subjects; Electronics goes deeper into circuits and communication; Automation and Robotics is a newer, narrower branch focused on industrial automation and robots, while Mechatronics is broader and covers any intelligent electromechanical product, from cars and medical devices to consumer gadgets.

Salary
Freshers usually earn ₹4–8 LPA (approx.) in automation, automotive and electronics firms; IIT and top private university graduates in robotics or embedded roles can earn more. With 5–8 years in controls, robotics or embedded design, pay of ₹10–20 LPA (approx.) is common.
Hands-on skills (PLC programming, ROS, embedded C, CAD) and project portfolios count heavily. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Indian manufacturing is automating fast in 2026: auto plants, electronics assembly, warehouses, pharma and food processing are all adding robots, sensors and connected machines. Mechatronics engineers fit naturally into these Industry 4.0 projects, and defence, drones and medical-device makers also need people who understand mechanics, electronics and software together.
The challenge is that Mechatronics is not a GATE paper of its own, and some PSUs do not list it as an eligible branch. Check notifications early, and build depth in one area (controls, embedded or robotics) alongside the broad base.
After this course
- M.Tech in Mechatronics, Robotics or Control via GATE (ME/EE/IN)
- MS abroad in Mechatronics or Robotics (Germany, USA)
- M.Tech in Industrial Automation and Robotics
- PhD in robotics, controls or autonomous systems
- MBA in operations or technology management
Mechatronics FAQs
Is Mechatronics better than Mechanical Engineering?
Neither is simply better. Mechatronics suits students who want automation, robots and electronics; Mechanical offers more depth in thermal and fluid subjects and wider PSU eligibility.
Which IIT offers Mechatronics?
IIT Bhilai offers a B.Tech in Mechatronics Engineering through JEE Advanced and JoSAA. Most other IITs teach mechatronics through electives or minors within Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
Which GATE paper should a Mechatronics graduate take?
There is no separate paper; most choose Mechanical (ME), Electrical (EE) or Instrumentation (IN) depending on their strengths and the M.Tech or PSU they target.
What is the difference between Mechatronics and Automation and Robotics?
Mechatronics is broader and covers any smart electromechanical system. Automation and Robotics focuses specifically on industrial automation, robot design and programming.
Do Mechatronics engineers need to code?
Yes. Programming microcontrollers, PLCs and robots is a core part of the job, so expect to learn C, Python and industrial programming languages.
Is Mechatronics offered at NITs?
Regular B.Tech Mechatronics seats at NITs are uncommon; most NITs teach it through electives, minors or M.Tech programmes. Check the current JoSAA seat matrix for the latest list of institutes and branches.
