MSW

The professional master's for careers in NGOs, CSR, hospitals and development work

MSW (Master of Social Work) is a two-year professional postgraduate degree that prepares graduates to lead social-welfare, community-development, health and CSR programmes. It combines advanced social-work theory with intensive supervised fieldwork and specialisations such as medical, psychiatric or community social work.

What is MSW?

MSW is the main professional qualification for social workers in India. It builds on the basics of case work, group work and community organisation, and adds social policy, research, project management and specialised practice.

Field practicum runs through both years: students spend fixed days every week with hospitals, NGOs, trade unions, government projects or companies, and complete a block placement and a research dissertation. Many institutes also have campus placements with NGOs and CSR foundations.

Compared with an MA Sociology, MSW is practice-oriented rather than academic. Compared with an MBA in Rural Management, it is more focused on people and welfare than on business and enterprise. A BSW is helpful but not required.

Yes, in practice. Different universities use either name for the same two-year professional programme.

Which MSW specialisation pays the most?

HR/labour welfare and CSR roles usually pay more at the start than field-based community roles. Medical social work is in steady demand in hospitals.
