What is MBA / PGDM?
An MBA teaches how to run and grow organisations. The first year builds a common core in accounting, finance, marketing, economics, operations, organisational behaviour and strategy. The summer internship between the two years is often the route to a final job offer.
The second year is mostly electives, letting you specialise in finance, marketing, consulting, analytics, HR or operations, along with live projects, case competitions and final placements.
How it differs from close alternatives: A PGDM from an AICTE-approved autonomous institute (such as XLRI) is treated on par with an MBA by employers. M.Com is an academic degree focused on commerce and accounting, while an MBA is professional and placement-oriented. Executive MBAs suit people with several years of work experience.

Salary
MBA salaries vary more than almost any other degree. Top IIMs report average packages of roughly ₹25–35 LPA (approx.), while many good mid-level schools report ₹8–15 LPA and a large number of smaller colleges report ₹4–7 LPA (approx.).
The institute's brand, your specialisation, prior work experience and the hiring sector (consulting and finance pay most) decide pay. Always read audited, independently verified placement reports, and look at the median, not just the highest package. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's expanding economy, startups, consulting and financial services keep demand for capable managers strong. In 2026, employers especially want MBAs who combine business sense with data analytics, digital and AI-related skills, and product thinking.
At the same time, the gap between top schools and the rest is wide. An MBA pays off best from a well-ranked institute with verified placements, or after a few years of work experience that sharpens your goals.

MBA / PGDM FAQs
Is MBA better than PGDM?
Neither is automatically better. MBA is a degree from a university or an IIM; PGDM is a diploma from an AICTE-approved autonomous institute. What matters is the institute's quality, accreditation and placements.
Can I do an MBA without work experience?
Yes, most Indian full-time MBA programmes admit freshers. Some schools give extra weight to experience, and programmes like ISB's PGP expect it.
When is CAT held?
CAT is usually held on the last Sunday of November, with registration from early August to mid-September. CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026; confirm on iimcat.ac.in.
Can a non-commerce student do an MBA?
Yes. Graduates from engineering, science, arts or any other field can take CAT and join an MBA. Many top B-schools actively seek academic diversity.
What is the average salary after an MBA?
It depends on the school: about ₹25–35 LPA (approx.) at top IIMs and much lower at most other colleges. Check each school's verified placement report.
Which MBA specialisation has the best scope?
Finance, consulting/strategy, marketing and business analytics usually offer the most roles. Pick one that matches your interests and earlier experience.
