M.Com

A two-year master's in commerce leading to teaching, research, finance and tax roles

M.Com (Master of Commerce) is a two-year postgraduate degree that deepens a commerce graduate's knowledge of accounting, finance, taxation, economics and research. It is the standard route to college teaching (through UGC-NET) and a solid base for finance and tax careers.

M.Com (Master of Commerce) PG 2 years (4 semesters); 1 year at some universities for 4-year honours graduates under NEP 2020

What is M.Com?

M.Com builds advanced knowledge of how businesses report, finance and tax their activities, and how commerce is studied through research. You go beyond B.Com into corporate financial reporting, advanced cost and management accounting, financial markets, tax planning and quantitative methods.

Most programmes include a research methodology course and a dissertation, which is useful for those planning UGC-NET, a PhD or a teaching career.

How it differs from close alternatives: An MBA is placement-driven and broader in management, while M.Com is academic and deeper in commerce subjects. CA, CMA and CS are professional qualifications with licensing; many M.Com students pursue one of them in parallel.

  • Students aiming to become college lecturers through UGC-NET or a PhD

Scope & higher studies

M.Com is valued in teaching, research and finance roles that need strong subject knowledge. Expansion of higher education under NEP 2020 keeps demand for qualified commerce faculty steady, while companies need people who understand financial reporting, GST and capital markets.

For corporate jobs, M.Com graduates who add analytics tools, accounting software or a professional qualification compete much better in 2026 than those relying on the degree alone.
