Cost & Management Accountant (CMA)

A professional qualification in cost, management accounting and financial strategy

Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) is a professional qualification awarded by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), a statutory body. CMAs specialise in costing, budgeting, performance management and cost audit, helping companies control costs and make better decisions.

What is CMA?

The CMA course is run by ICMAI under its Syllabus 2022 (applicable from the June 2023 term). It has three levels: Foundation (4 papers), Intermediate (8 papers in two groups) and Final (8 papers in two groups, including one elective), along with computer training, soft-skills programmes and 15 months of practical training.

You learn cost accounting and costing systems, management accounting, financial accounting, direct and indirect tax, laws, financial management, business data analytics, strategic cost management and cost and management audit. Cost audit under the Companies Act is a role reserved for practising CMAs.

How it differs from close alternatives: CA focuses on statutory audit, tax and financial reporting; CMA on cost control, budgeting and decision support. CS centres on law and governance. The US CMA (from IMA) is a different, international certification and not the same as ICMAI's CMA.

Indian manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and PSUs rely on cost management to stay competitive, and cost audit is mandatory for many industries. Production-linked incentive schemes and growing manufacturing keep demand for CMAs steady.

CMA FAQs

Is CMA the same as US CMA?

No. ICMAI's CMA is an Indian statutory qualification with Foundation, Intermediate and Final levels. US CMA is a separate certification from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).

Can I do CMA after Class 12?

Yes. You register for CMA Foundation after Class 12 in any stream. Graduates can enter directly at Intermediate.

How long does the CMA course take?

About 3.5–4 years after Class 12 if you pass each level on time. Graduates using direct entry can finish in about 2.5–3 years.

How often are CMA exams held?

ICMAI holds CMA exams twice a year, in June and December. Check icmai.in for the exact timetable and registration deadlines.

Is CMA a good career compared with CA?

CMA is shorter and focuses on costing and management decisions, with strong demand in manufacturing and PSUs. CA has wider recognition for audit and tax. Pick the one that suits your interests.
