Petrochemical Engineering (Petrochemical Engg.)

Refine crude oil and gas into fuels, plastics and chemicals: downstream process careers

Petrochemical Engineering is a branch of chemical engineering that focuses on refining crude oil and natural gas and converting them into fuels, polymers, fertiliser feedstocks and other chemicals. It is offered at a limited number of Indian colleges, such as AMU Aligarh, DBATU Lonere, JNTU Kakinada and LIT Nagpur (as Petrochemical Technology).

What is Petrochemical Engg.?

Petrochemical Engineering starts where Petroleum Engineering ends. Once crude oil or gas reaches a refinery, petrochemical engineers separate it by distillation, crack and reform it with catalysts, and turn the products into petrol, diesel, jet fuel, LPG, and building blocks such as ethylene, propylene and aromatics, which then become plastics, synthetic fibres, detergents and solvents.

The core is the same as Chemical Engineering (thermodynamics, transport, reaction engineering, process control), with extra depth in petroleum refining, catalysis, petrochemical processes, polymer technology and refinery safety. Process simulation with tools such as Aspen HYSYS is a key skill.

Where it is taught: AMU's Department of Petroleum Studies (B.Tech Petrochemical Engineering, about 30 seats), Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (DBATU), Lonere, JNTU College of Engineering Kakinada, and Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT), Nagpur, which calls it Petrochemical Technology. Because the branch is niche, many refinery engineers are in fact Chemical Engineering graduates; that remains a safe alternative.

  • Minimum marks usually 45% in PCM for general category and 40% for reserved categories (AICTE norm); some colleges ask for more.
  • For JoSAA institutes (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs): 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or top-20 percentile in your board.
  • No upper age limit for JEE Main; JEE Advanced allows two consecutive attempts.
  • AMU requires at least 50% aggregate in English, Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12 and admits through its own B.Tech entrance test.
  • LIT Nagpur and DBATU admit through Maharashtra CAP (MHT CET/JEE Main); JNTU Kakinada through AP EAPCET.

How admission works

  1. Shortlist colleges that actually offer Petrochemical Engineering/Technology and note the exam each uses.
  2. Write the AMU B.Tech entrance test, MHT CET, JEE Main or AP EAPCET as needed.
  3. Register for counselling: AMU counselling, Maharashtra CAP (DTE) or AP EAPCET counselling.
  4. Choose Petrochemical Engineering/Technology, accept the allotted seat and pay the fee.
  5. Complete document verification and report to the college.

Salary

Freshers typically start at ₹4–8 LPA (approx.) in private refineries, petrochemical companies and EPC firms. Oil PSUs recruit mainly through GATE (Chemical Engineering paper), with executive-trainee packages of roughly ₹12–18 LPA cost to company (approx.).

With 5–10 years of experience, refinery and design engineers commonly earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.), and Middle East postings can pay more. Simulation skills, safety certifications and large-plant experience raise pay. Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

India is the world's fourth-largest refiner and keeps expanding refinery and petrochemical capacity, with new and upgraded complexes at Panipat, Barmer, Paradip, Jamnagar and elsewhere. Demand for plastics and synthetic fibres is rising faster than for fuels, so oil companies are integrating refineries with petrochemical plants, which needs process engineers.

In 2026, growth areas include biofuels and ethanol blending, green hydrogen in refineries, chemical recycling of plastics and lower-emission processes. Graduates should note that only a few colleges offer this exact branch, and that GATE Chemical is the main route to PSU jobs.

After this course

  • M.Tech in Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering via GATE (CH paper)
  • M.Tech in Petroleum Processing and Petrochemical Engineering (e.g. AMU)
  • MS abroad in chemical or process engineering
  • MBA in Oil and Gas or operations
  • PSU careers via GATE

Petrochemical Engg. FAQs

Is Petrochemical Engineering different from Chemical Engineering?

It is a specialised form of Chemical Engineering with extra focus on refining and petrochemicals. Chemical Engineering is broader and opens more industries.

Which colleges offer Petrochemical Engineering?

Verified options include AMU Aligarh, DBATU Lonere, JNTU College of Engineering Kakinada and LIT Nagpur (Petrochemical Technology). Always check the current programme list on the official website.

Can petrochemical engineers get PSU jobs?

Yes. IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL and others recruit through GATE, mostly using the Chemical Engineering (CH) paper. Check each PSU's eligible branches in its notice.

What is the salary after Petrochemical Engineering?

Freshers typically earn about ₹4–8 LPA (approx.), while PSU executive trainees earn more. Experienced refinery engineers can earn ₹12–25 LPA.

Will petrochemical jobs decline because of EVs?

Fuel demand may slow, but demand for petrochemicals such as plastics and fibres is still growing. Refineries are also moving into biofuels and hydrogen, which need the same skills.
