What is Energy Management?
Energy Management teaches you to look at energy as a resource to be measured, priced and optimised. You learn how power is generated from coal, gas, hydro, solar and wind, how it reaches users, and how factories, buildings and cities can use less of it without losing output.
Typical topics include energy auditing, thermal and electrical energy efficiency, renewable energy systems, energy economics and tariffs, power markets, carbon accounting, and Indian energy law such as the Energy Conservation Act. M.Tech programmes stay technical (audits, system design, simulation), while MBA programmes in power or energy management focus on finance, trading, regulation and project management.
Be realistic about the level: very few Indian colleges offer a B.Tech titled Energy Management. Class 12 students who want this career usually take Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Energy Engineering first (IIT Bombay offers a dual degree in Energy Engineering through JEE Advanced), then specialise through an M.Tech or MBA. Professional certification as an energy manager or energy auditor from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) also requires an engineering degree plus work experience.

Eligibility & admission
- M.Tech Energy Management / Energy Engineering: B.E./B.Tech in a relevant branch (or M.Sc. Physics at some universities), usually with 55–60% marks; valid GATE score for most government institutes.
- MBA Power/Energy Management: graduation (often engineering preferred) with about 50–60% marks plus CAT, MAT, CMAT, XAT or the institute test.
- UG route (Class 12 students): Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12; JEE Main/Advanced or state CET for Electrical, Mechanical or Energy Engineering.
- BEE energy manager/auditor certification: engineering degree plus required years of energy-related work experience.
How admission works
- Complete a B.E./B.Tech (or relevant M.Sc.) from a recognised university
- Take GATE for M.Tech, or CAT/MAT/CMAT/institute test for MBA programmes
- Apply to each institute (or state PG counselling) before its deadline
- Attend interview or group discussion if the institute requires it
- Verify documents and pay fees to confirm the seat

Salary
After an M.Tech or MBA in energy, freshers usually earn ₹4–9 LPA (approx.); MBA graduates from strong institutes placed in power trading or consulting can earn more. Certified energy auditors and managers with 5–10 years of experience typically earn ₹10–20 LPA (approx.), and senior roles in renewable developers, trading desks or ESG consulting go higher.
Pay depends on your first degree, institute, BEE certification and sector (consulting and trading pay more than audits for small firms). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India has committed to net-zero by 2070, is expanding renewable capacity very fast and is rolling out a national carbon market. Large industries must appoint energy managers and carry out audits under the Energy Conservation Act, and companies now report emissions to investors. This makes energy efficiency, renewables and carbon accounting a steady growth area in 2026.
The field rewards a strong engineering base plus management skills. Students should treat Energy Management as a specialisation after a core B.Tech, not as a first degree, and should build site experience early because certification and senior roles depend on it.
After this course
- PhD in energy systems, policy or renewable energy
- MS abroad in Energy Systems or Sustainable Energy
- BEE Certified Energy Manager / Energy Auditor credential
- Executive MBA in Energy or Sustainability
- Certifications such as IGBC/GRIHA (green buildings) or CFA ESG
Energy Management FAQs
Can I study Energy Management right after Class 12?
Rarely. Almost all Energy Management programmes in India are M.Tech, MBA or PG diplomas. After Class 12, choose Electrical, Mechanical or Energy Engineering and specialise later.
Is GATE required for M.Tech Energy Management?
Most government institutes such as IITs, NITs and state universities use GATE scores. Some private universities run their own tests or interviews.
What is a BEE certified energy manager?
It is a professional certification from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. You need an engineering degree plus energy-related work experience to sit the national exam, so it comes after you start working.
MBA in Power Management or M.Tech in Energy: which is better?
Pick the M.Tech for technical, audit and design roles. Pick an MBA for trading, finance, regulation and business roles in power companies.
Is energy management a good career in India?
Yes, demand is rising with renewables, efficiency rules and carbon reporting. Growth is fastest for people who combine technical skills with data and policy knowledge.
