What is Environmental Engg?
Environmental engineering grew out of what used to be called sanitary or public health engineering within civil engineering. Today it is a multidisciplinary field that designs water treatment plants, sewage and effluent treatment systems, air pollution controls, landfills and recycling facilities, and assesses the environmental impact of new projects.
Students learn the civil engineering base (fluid mechanics, hydraulics, structures) together with environmental chemistry and microbiology, water and wastewater treatment design, air pollution engineering, solid and hazardous waste management, environmental impact assessment, climate change and sustainability, and environmental laws and regulations.
UG vs PG: A dedicated B.Tech is available at only a few institutes, notably IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (through JEE Advanced and JoSAA) and Delhi Technological University (through JEE Main and JAC Delhi). Many IITs, NITs and universities instead offer M.Tech Environmental Engineering after B.Tech Civil, Chemical or related branches; GATE now also has a separate Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) paper. Environmental Science (B.Sc./M.Sc.) is a science route, while this course designs engineered solutions.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- IIT (ISM) Dhanbad: JEE Advanced rank plus 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or top 20 percentile of the board, as per JoSAA rules.
- DTU: JEE Main rank and JAC Delhi counselling; minimum Class 12 marks as per DTU rules (generally 60% in PCM for general category).
- Other state institutes usually ask for 45% in PCM (40% for reserved categories).
- M.Tech: B.E./B.Tech Civil, Chemical, Environmental or related, usually 60%, with a valid GATE score (CE or ES paper, as accepted by the institute).
How admission works
- Write JEE Main; if eligible, also write JEE Advanced for IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
- Register for JoSAA (IITs/NITs) or JAC Delhi (DTU) counselling and add Environmental Engineering to your choices.
- Lock choices, track round-wise allotment and accept your seat.
- Complete document verification (Class 10/12 mark sheets, category and domicile certificates).
- Pay fees and report; for M.Tech later, take GATE and apply via COAP/CCMT.

Salary
Freshers usually start at about ₹3.5–8 LPA (approx.); graduates of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and DTU can receive higher campus offers, while many environmental consultancy roles start at the lower end. M.Tech graduates from IITs and NITs commonly start around ₹6–12 LPA (approx.).
With 8–10 years of experience, plant design managers, senior EIA consultants and EHS heads often earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.). Pay grows with design skills, process knowledge, certifications and industry choice (EPC and multinationals usually pay more than consultancies). Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's environmental challenges are large: polluted rivers, urban air quality, millions of tonnes of municipal and industrial waste every year, and water stress. National programmes on clean rivers, rural drinking water, sanitation and waste management, along with stricter pollution norms, keep demand high for engineers who can design treatment and control systems in 2026.
Climate action is adding new roles in carbon accounting, ESG reporting, circular economy and climate-resilient infrastructure. Engineers who combine design skills with knowledge of regulations and data tools are especially well placed.

Which IIT offers B.Tech Environmental Engineering?
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers a four-year B.Tech in Environmental Engineering through JEE Advanced and JoSAA. Other IITs mainly teach it at M.Tech level within Civil Engineering.
Is Environmental Engineering the same as Environmental Science?
No. Environmental Science (B.Sc./M.Sc.) studies the environment scientifically, while Environmental Engineering designs plants, systems and structures that solve pollution and resource problems.
Which GATE paper should I write for M.Tech Environmental Engineering?
GATE has a separate Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) paper, and most institutes also accept the Civil Engineering (CE) paper. Check each institute's list of accepted papers.
Are there government jobs for environmental engineers?
Yes, in central and state pollution control boards, urban local bodies, water supply departments and PSU environment cells, usually through UPSC, state PSC or board recruitment exams.
