What is Nuclear Engg.?
Nuclear Engineering deals with the physics of fission (and future fusion), the design of reactor cores, heat removal, radiation shielding, fuel cycles, waste management and, above all, safety. It also covers radiation detection and the use of isotopes in cancer treatment, imaging, agriculture and industrial testing.
Where it is taught: IITs do not run a regular B.Tech in Nuclear Engineering. The standard path is a B.Tech in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Electronics or Instrumentation, followed by an M.Tech (e.g. IIT Kanpur's Nuclear Engineering and Technology programme, PDEU's M.Tech in Nuclear Science and Technology) or the one-year Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES) at BARC Training Schools. A few private universities, notably Amity University Noida, offer a B.Tech or integrated B.Tech-M.Tech in Nuclear Science and Technology.
India's nuclear employers (NPCIL, BARC, IGCAR, AERB, BHAVINI) mostly hire mechanical, electrical, chemical, electronics and instrumentation graduates and train them in-house. That is why a strong core branch is the safer first step for Class 12 students.

- B.Tech (few private universities): Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; Amity, for example, has asked for 60% in PCM plus interview.
- Class 12 students targeting this field should first secure a core B.Tech through JEE Main/Advanced or a state CET.
How admission works
- After Class 12, join a core B.Tech (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Electronics, Instrumentation) via JEE or state CET
- In final year, take GATE in your discipline

Salary
Government entry is the most common start. NPCIL Executive Trainees and BARC trainees are placed in pay level 10 of the 7th CPC (basic pay about ₹56,100 per month), which works out to roughly ₹10–12 LPA total (approx.) with allowances. Private B.Tech graduates without such selection may start at ₹4–7 LPA (approx.) in engineering firms. With 10+ years, scientists and senior engineers earn ₹20–35 LPA (approx.), plus government benefits.
As private companies enter nuclear power under the new law, design and project roles may pay more. Figures vary; check current recruitment notices and placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India announced a Nuclear Energy Mission in the 2025-26 Union Budget, targeting 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 against about 8–9 GW today, with home-grown small modular reactors as a key part. The SHANTI Act, 2025 opened civil nuclear power to Indian private companies for the first time, while sensitive fuel-cycle work stays with the government. This should create far more jobs in design, construction, operation and regulation over the next two decades.
Hiring is still disciplined and slow, and most employers recruit core engineers through GATE. The best strategy in 2026 is a strong core B.Tech, a good GATE rank and then specialisation through OCES or an M.Tech.
After this course
- M.Tech in Nuclear Engineering via GATE
- PhD at HBNI, IITs or abroad
- MS in Nuclear Engineering abroad (USA, France, UK, South Korea)
- Medical Physics programmes (with AERB-recognised training)
- UPSC Engineering Services or state PSC technical posts
Nuclear Engg. FAQs
Can I do B.Tech in Nuclear Engineering at an IIT?
No regular IIT offers a B.Tech titled Nuclear Engineering. IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay offer postgraduate nuclear programmes, so take a core B.Tech first.
Which B.Tech branch is best for a nuclear career?
Mechanical is most in demand at NPCIL and BARC, followed by Electrical, Chemical, Electronics and Instrumentation. Choose the one you are strongest in and aim for a good GATE rank.
How do I join BARC as a scientist?
Engineering graduates apply for the OCES programme, using a GATE score or BARC's online test, followed by an interview. After one year of training at a BARC Training School, they join as Scientific Officers.
Is a private B.Tech in Nuclear Science worth it?
It gives deep subject knowledge, but government employers mostly recruit by core discipline. Check the college's placement record and whether its degree is accepted in BARC and NPCIL notifications before joining.
Is nuclear engineering safe as a career?
Indian plants follow strict AERB radiation limits and dose monitoring. Workers are trained, and doses are kept well within legal limits.
