What is EMT?
Electronics and Media Technology looks at media from the engineer's side: how sound and pictures are captured, compressed, edited, transmitted and played back. The course mixes standard electronics subjects (devices, digital circuits, signals, communication systems) with media subjects such as audio and video engineering, broadcast systems, digital compositing, photography and production workflows.
It is very different from BJMC or a mass-communication degree, which focus on content, journalism and storytelling. EMT graduates are expected to run and design the equipment and systems: studio and outside-broadcast setups, streaming pipelines, sound and lighting systems.
Be aware that this is a niche branch. Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences in Coimbatore is the best-known institution that has offered a B.Tech under this name, and very few others do. Many students who want this career instead take ECE and add audio-video, multimedia or signal-processing electives, which keeps more job options open.

Eligibility & admission
- Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry or another technical subject.
- Minimum aggregate usually 45–50% in PCM (lower for reserved categories, as per AICTE and state rules).
- Some universities hold their own entrance test or interview; others use JEE Main or state merit.
- No age limit is generally prescribed.
How admission works
- Confirm that the college currently runs a B.Tech Electronics and Media Technology batch (the course is rare and offerings change).
- Apply to the university and write its entrance exam, or submit JEE Main/state scores if accepted.
- Attend counselling or the university's seat-allotment process.
- Pay the fee and complete document verification with Class 10/12 marksheets and ID.

Salary
Starting pay is usually ₹3–5 LPA (approx.) in broadcast, post-production and AV companies; media-tech and streaming firms with a software angle can pay more. With 5–8 years of experience as a broadcast or streaming engineer, ₹8–15 LPA is achievable, and senior technical heads at large networks earn well above that.
Pay depends heavily on your portfolio, software skills (editing, scripting, networking) and the city; Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru have most jobs. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India is one of the world's biggest markets for streaming video, regional films, live sports and gaming, and all of it rests on capture, encoding and delivery technology. Broadcast is shifting to IP and cloud workflows, and virtual production with LED walls is arriving in Indian studios, which favours engineers who understand both electronics and software.
Because the branch is so rare, employers may not recognise its name; your skills and portfolio will speak louder than the degree title. An ECE degree with media electives is a safer alternative if EMT is not available near you.
After this course
- M.Tech in Communication Systems or Signal Processing via GATE (EC)
- MS abroad in Audio Engineering, Media Technology or Music Technology
- Postgraduate diploma in sound recording or film technology (e.g. FTII, SRFTI entrance)
- MBA in media management
- M.Des in interaction or digital media design
EMT FAQs
Which college offers B.Tech Electronics and Media Technology?
Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore is the best-known institution that has offered it. Very few other colleges run it, so confirm the current intake directly with the university before applying.
Is EMT the same as a mass communication degree?
No. Mass communication (BJMC) is about content and journalism. EMT is an engineering degree about the electronics and systems that carry media.
Can I take GATE after EMT?
Yes. The GATE Electronics and Communication (EC) paper is the closest fit, since EMT covers circuits, signals and communication.
Is ECE a better choice than EMT?
For most students, ECE offers wider jobs and more colleges. Choose EMT only if you are sure you want a technical career in media and the college has good industry links.
What software should EMT students learn?
Video editing and compositing tools, audio workstations, and some programming (Python) and networking basics are all useful for broadcast and streaming jobs.
