B.V.Sc & AH

A 5.5-year degree to become a registered vet for pets, livestock and wildlife

B.V.Sc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) is a five-and-a-half-year professional degree that trains you to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases in animals and to improve livestock production. It is regulated by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI), and admission is through NEET-UG.

What is B.V.Sc & AH?

Veterinarians look after animal health in clinics, farms, dairies, poultry units, zoos and public health labs. In B.V.Sc & AH you learn animal anatomy and physiology, then pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery and obstetrics for dogs, cats, cattle, buffaloes, poultry and other species.

The 'Animal Husbandry' part covers nutrition, breeding, livestock management, dairy and meat technology and veterinary extension, so you can also guide farmers on productivity. Teaching follows the VCI's Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education, with hands-on work in the college's veterinary clinical complex and a one-year internship.

Regulation and admission: the course is regulated by the Veterinary Council of India. 15% of seats in VCI-recognised government colleges (outside Jammu and Kashmir) are filled through VCI's online counselling using NEET-UG ranks; the rest go through state veterinary universities. Unlike MBBS, you treat animals, and you can also work on zoonoses and food safety under the 'One Health' approach.

Salary

Fresh veterinarians usually earn ₹4–8 LPA (approx.). State Veterinary Officer posts are among the better-paid entry government jobs for graduates and come with job security, while Army RVC officers get defence pay and benefits.

In private practice, income depends on location and reputation; established pet clinics in cities can earn well beyond salaried roles. An M.V.Sc, a specialist skill such as surgery or imaging, or industry experience can take pay to ₹10–20 LPA or more over time (approx.). Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

India has the world's largest livestock population and is the largest milk producer, but the number of veterinarians per animal is still low. Government schemes for livestock health, disease control (such as foot-and-mouth disease and brucellosis vaccination) and mobile veterinary units are creating steady demand.

Pet ownership in cities is also rising quickly, boosting demand for small-animal clinics, diagnostics and pet-care businesses. Veterinarians also play a growing role in 'One Health' work on zoonotic diseases and food safety.

After this course

  • M.V.Sc through ICAR AIEEA-PG or state university tests
  • PhD in veterinary sciences
  • MBA in Agribusiness or Dairy Management
  • Master of Public Health (One Health, epidemiology)
  • Licensing exams and master's abroad (e.g. UK, Australia, US)
