B.Sc Computer Science (B.Sc CS)

A science degree in computing theory and programming for tech, data and research careers

B.Sc Computer Science is an undergraduate science degree covering programming, algorithms, data structures, databases and the mathematics behind computing. It runs for 3 years, or 4 years for the Honours/Research option under NEP, and leads to software and data jobs, an M.Sc/MCA or research.

What is B.Sc CS?

B.Sc Computer Science treats computing as a science. Alongside programming in C++, Java and Python, you study discrete mathematics, algorithms, theory of computation, computer architecture, operating systems and databases, so you understand why things work and not just how to use them.

Final-year electives commonly include machine learning, data mining, computer graphics, cryptography and cloud computing, with a project. At Delhi University and similar universities, B.Sc (Hons) Computer Science also includes generic electives and skill courses from other subjects.

How it differs from close alternatives: BCA is more application- and software-tool oriented, while B.Sc CS has more theory and maths. B.Tech CSE is a 4-year engineering degree via JEE/state CETs with engineering mathematics and electronics. B.Sc CS is a good fit for students who like maths and may want an M.Sc, MCA or research later.

Who is this course for?

Eligibility & admission

  • Class 12 (10+2) pass with Mathematics; most colleges expect Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), some accept Maths with Computer Science.
  • Minimum marks usually 50–60% aggregate for general category and about 45% for reserved categories; top DU colleges admit only through CUET-UG scores.
  • For CUET-UG, take the subject combination the university lists (for DU this usually includes Mathematics).
  • No upper age limit at most universities.

How admission works

  1. Check whether your target university admits through CUET-UG, its own test or Class 12 marks.
  2. Register for CUET-UG with the required subjects (commonly Mathematics, plus Physics/Chemistry/Computer Science and a language).
  3. Take the exam and wait for the NTA score card.
  4. Register on the university admission portal (e.g. DU CSAS) and fill college and course preferences.
  5. Accept the allotted seat, complete document verification and pay fees.

Salary

Typical fresher packages are ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.); students from top DU and autonomous colleges with strong coding skills sometimes get ₹8–12 LPA. After 4–6 years, software and data roles commonly pay ₹10–20 LPA (approx.).

Pay rises with problem-solving ability, projects, internships and a good master's (M.Sc, MCA or MS). Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

Computer science graduates remain in demand across IT services, product companies, analytics firms and the global capability centres expanding in Indian cities in 2026. AI, data engineering, cloud and security skills are especially valued.

The degree's maths-heavy base makes it easier to move into data science, AI or research, but competition for the best roles means students should build projects and consider a master's.

After this course

  • M.Sc Computer Science / Data Science (CUET-PG, university tests)
  • MCA (NIMCET for NITs, CUET-PG)
  • M.Tech via GATE (some institutes admit B.Sc + M.Sc holders)
  • MS in Computer Science abroad
  • MBA via CAT
  • PhD after master's

B.Sc CS FAQs

Is B.Sc Computer Science better than BCA?

Neither is simply better. B.Sc CS has more theory and maths, which helps for data science, research and M.Sc; BCA is more application-focused. Choose based on whether you enjoy maths.

Is Mathematics compulsory for B.Sc Computer Science?

Yes, almost every college requires Mathematics in Class 12. Many also expect Physics and Chemistry.

Can I get a software job after B.Sc CS?

Yes. IT services and many product firms hire B.Sc CS graduates, especially those with good coding skills and projects.

Can I do M.Tech after B.Sc Computer Science?

Usually you need a master's (M.Sc/MCA) first for most M.Tech programmes through GATE, though rules vary by institute. Check the eligibility of each institute.

How is B.Sc CS admission done at Delhi University?

Through CUET-UG scores and the DU CSAS portal. You must take the subject combination DU specifies for the course.
