What is BCA?
BCA teaches you how to build and run software. You learn programming languages (C, C++, Java, Python), data structures, databases, operating systems, computer networks and web development, with a lot of lab work and a final software project.
Later semesters add electives such as cloud computing, data analytics, mobile app development, cyber security and AI/ML basics. Most good colleges also include an internship.
How it differs from close alternatives: B.Tech CSE is a 4-year engineering degree with more mathematics, electronics and theory, and needs JEE or a state CET. B.Sc Computer Science is more theory- and maths-oriented and is often taught alongside Mathematics or Physics. BCA is the most application-focused of the three and is usually followed by an MCA for students who want a master's.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass in Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board in any stream at most universities; some require Science or Commerce.
- Many colleges ask for Mathematics or Computer Science/Informatics Practices in Class 12; a few accept students without Maths but add a bridge course.
- Minimum marks usually 45–50% aggregate for general category and about 40–45% for reserved categories (varies by university).
- No upper age limit at most universities.
- Lateral entry into the 2nd year is offered by some universities to diploma holders in Computer Science/IT.
How admission works
- Check each college's BCA eligibility (especially the Maths requirement) and whether it uses CUET-UG, its own test or Class 12 marks.
- Register for CUET-UG (usually Feb–March) or the university's own entrance test, choosing the subjects the college lists.
- Write the test; many private universities add a short interview or aptitude round.
- Apply on the university's admission portal (for example DU CSAS or GGSIPU counselling) with your scores and preferences.
- Accept the seat, verify documents (Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, category certificate) and pay fees.

Salary
Most BCA freshers start at about ₹3–6 LPA (approx.) in IT services firms; strong coders from top colleges or with good internships can get ₹6–10 LPA. With 4–6 years of experience, developers and analysts usually earn ₹8–18 LPA (approx.), and more in product companies.
Pay depends far more on your skills (coding, projects, certifications, GitHub portfolio) than on the degree name. An MCA or a good master's degree often improves the first offer. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's IT services, global capability centres (GCCs) and startups continue to hire large numbers of developers, testers and support engineers in 2026. Demand is strongest for cloud, data, cyber security and AI-related skills, while purely routine coding roles are being reshaped by AI tools.
BCA graduates who keep learning, build real projects and add an MCA or certifications have good long-term prospects; those who rely on the degree alone may find the entry-level market competitive.
After this course
- MCA (via NIMCET for NITs, CUET-PG or university tests)
- MBA (IT/Systems or general) via CAT, MAT, XAT
- M.Sc Computer Science / Data Science
- MS in Computer Science abroad
- Professional certifications (AWS, Azure, Cisco, cyber security)
BCA FAQs
Is Mathematics compulsory for BCA?
Not everywhere. Many colleges require Maths or Computer Science in Class 12, but several universities admit students from any stream and may add a bridge course. Check the specific college's rules.
Is BCA equal to B.Tech CSE?
No. B.Tech is a 4-year engineering degree with more theory and maths, while BCA is a 3-year (or 4-year Honours) application-focused degree. BCA plus MCA is often treated as comparable for IT jobs.
Can a Commerce student do BCA?
Yes, at many universities, especially if they studied Maths or Computer Science/IP in Class 12. Commerce students often do well if they practise programming early.
Should I do the 4-year BCA?
The 4th year (Honours or Honours with Research) adds advanced electives and a project or dissertation. It helps if you plan research, a master's abroad or a 1-year master's; otherwise the 3-year degree plus skills is enough for jobs.
What is a good salary after BCA?
Freshers typically earn ₹3–6 LPA (approx.). Your coding skills, projects and internships matter more than the college for the first job.
Which entrance exam is needed for BCA?
Many central and private universities use CUET-UG, some use their own tests (SET, Christ), and many colleges admit on Class 12 marks.
