What is BHMS?
BHMS is regulated by the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH), which replaced the Central Council of Homoeopathy. Under the NCH's 2022 regulations, the course lasts five years and six months, including a 12-month compulsory rotatory internship, and admission requires a qualifying NEET-UG score.
Homoeopathy treats patients with highly diluted remedies chosen by matching the full picture of a person's symptoms. Alongside homoeopathic philosophy (Organon of Medicine), Materia Medica and Repertory, you study anatomy, physiology, pathology, forensic medicine, obstetrics, surgery and practice of medicine so that you can diagnose conditions and know when to refer patients.
BHMS is different from MBBS (modern medicine) and from BAMS (Ayurveda). It places much more weight on detailed case-taking and individual remedy selection, and less on surgery. It suits students who enjoy long patient conversations and are interested in chronic and lifestyle-related conditions.

Fresh BHMS graduates usually earn about ₹2.5–5 LPA (approx.) as junior doctors in clinic chains, hospitals or companies. Government Homoeopathic Medical Officer posts follow state or central pay scales. With MD (Homoeopathy), several years of practice or a loyal patient base, earnings of ₹6–12 LPA (approx.) or more are possible.
Income depends heavily on location, reputation, whether you own a practice, and on government versus private employment. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India has one of the largest homoeopathy systems in the world, with government dispensaries, research councils and AYUSH wings in hospitals. Expansion of AYUSH services and wellness centres creates steady openings, though private practice usually takes a few years to build.
Students should choose BHMS because they believe in and want to practise homoeopathy, not just as a fallback from MBBS. Those who add MD, strong clinical skills or research experience have the best career prospects in 2026.
