What is B.Sc Nursing?
B.Sc Nursing is regulated by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), which still carries out regulatory functions because the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission set up under the 2023 Act had not been constituted as of late 2026. The course follows the INC's revised competency-based curriculum, with eight semesters and an intensive internship (residency) in the final semester.
You learn the science behind patient care (anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology), then nursing skills for adults, children, mothers and newborns, mental health and community health. Much of the learning happens in hospital wards, ICUs, labour rooms and community postings.
B.Sc Nursing is a degree, so it opens more doors than the GNM diploma, including M.Sc Nursing, teaching and senior nursing posts. It is different from paramedical degrees such as BPT or B.Sc MLT, which train you for a single technical area rather than full patient care.

Eligibility & admission
- Passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with at least 45% aggregate in PCB and a pass in English (40% for SC, ST and OBC).
- Students from NIOS or state open schools with science and English are eligible under INC norms.
- Minimum age 17 years on or before 31 December of the admission year; candidates must be medically fit.
- Admission must be through an entrance test. NEET-UG is used in some states and institutes (for example Andhra Pradesh and Haryana from 2026–27, and the Military Nursing Service), while others hold their own nursing entrance. Check your state's notice each year.
- Post Basic B.Sc Nursing (2 years) is open to GNM-qualified registered nurses.
How admission works
- Find out which entrance your state or target institute uses: its own nursing entrance, AIIMS B.Sc Nursing (Hons), or NEET-UG.
- Apply for and appear in that entrance exam (or NEET-UG if required).
- Register for state nursing counselling or the institute's admission process.
- Choose colleges in order of preference; seats are allotted on merit and category.
- Check the college is INC-recognised and state-council approved, then report with documents and a medical fitness certificate.

Salary
Fresh B.Sc Nursing graduates in private hospitals usually earn about ₹3–6 LPA (approx.), with metro and corporate hospitals at the upper end. Central government Nursing Officer posts (e.g. at AIIMS) sit at Level 7 of the pay matrix and, with allowances, often work out higher than private starting pay.
With ICU or OT experience, specialisation or M.Sc Nursing, pay rises; nurses working abroad can earn several times Indian salaries. Figures vary; check current placement reports and recruitment notices.
Scope & higher studies
India still has fewer nurses per person than recommended, and new AIIMS institutes, medical colleges, primary-care centres and private hospitals all need trained nurses. Government recruitment through AIIMS Nursing Officer exams and state boards adds steady openings each year.
Indian nurses are also in strong demand overseas. Specialised skills in critical care, oncology, dialysis and midwifery, along with good English, give graduates the widest choice in 2026.

B.Sc Nursing FAQs
Is NEET compulsory for B.Sc Nursing?
Not across India. Some states, such as Andhra Pradesh and Haryana from 2026–27, and the Military Nursing Service use NEET-UG, while AIIMS and many states hold their own nursing entrance. Always check the current notice for your state or institute.
What is the minimum percentage for B.Sc Nursing?

Under the INC's revised curriculum, the final (eighth) semester is an intensive internship across clinical areas, often described as about 22 weeks. Check your university's scheme for the exact duration.
Can I work abroad after B.Sc Nursing?
Yes. After gaining experience, nurses often clear exams such as NCLEX-RN or the UK NMC tests, plus an English test, to work abroad.
