What is Civil & Structural?
Structural engineering is the part of civil engineering that answers one question: will it stand? Structural engineers calculate the loads a building, bridge, water tank, transmission tower or offshore platform must carry, choose materials such as reinforced concrete and steel, and size every beam, column, slab and foundation so that the structure stays safe and serviceable for decades.
A Civil and Structural Engineering degree keeps the full civil base (surveying, fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, transportation, environmental engineering) but adds more structural subjects: advanced analysis, concrete and steel design to Indian Standard codes such as IS 456 and IS 800, prestressed concrete, earthquake-resistant design and software such as STAAD.Pro and ETABS.
UG or PG? Only a few Indian universities run a separate undergraduate branch with this name; Annamalai University (Tamil Nadu) has offered a B.E. in Civil and Structural Engineering for many years. Everywhere else, the usual path is B.Tech Civil Engineering followed by an M.Tech or M.E. in Structural Engineering, which is offered by IITs, NITs and leading state universities. Employers treat both routes as civil engineering, so choose a strong college over a fancy branch name.

Eligibility & admission
- B.E./B.Tech: pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; usually 45% in PCM for general category and 40% for reserved categories (state rules apply).
- For Annamalai University, admission is through Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), which ranks students on Class 12 marks.
- Diploma holders in civil engineering can join the second year through lateral entry in most states.
- M.Tech/M.E. Structural: B.E./B.Tech in Civil (or Civil and Structural) Engineering, typically 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD at NITs), plus a valid GATE Civil Engineering score.
- No upper age limit for engineering admission.
How admission works
- Decide your route: a dedicated B.E. (few seats, e.g. Annamalai via TNEA) or B.Tech Civil at any good college via JEE Main or a state CET.
- Write the entrance exam or, for TNEA, apply with Class 12 marks.
- Register for counselling (TNEA, JoSAA/CSAB, or your state portal) and fill choices.
- Attend document verification with mark sheets, community and domicile certificates.
- Pay fees and report; for an M.Tech later, take GATE (Civil) and apply via CCMT (NITs) or IIT portals/COAP.

Salary
Fresh B.E./B.Tech graduates in civil and structural roles typically earn about ₹3.5–7 LPA (approx.); top campus offers from large EPC firms can be higher. Graduates with an M.Tech in Structural Engineering from an IIT or NIT often start around ₹6–14 LPA (approx.) in design consultancies.
With 5–10 years of experience and design sign-off responsibility, structural engineers commonly earn ₹12–25 LPA (approx.), and senior design leads or consultants more. Pay rises with skill in analysis software, knowledge of codes, a postgraduate degree and the size of projects handled. Government jobs follow pay-matrix levels with allowances. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India's spending on highways, metro rail, high-speed rail, airports, housing and industrial corridors keeps structural design work in steady demand in 2026. Stricter seismic codes, taller buildings in large cities and the need to inspect and repair ageing bridges and flyovers all need engineers who can do proper structural analysis rather than only site supervision.
The field is also changing: BIM, parametric design, precast and modular construction, and structural health monitoring with sensors are becoming normal on big projects. Students who combine solid fundamentals with software skills and, ideally, an M.Tech are best placed for design-office roles.
After this course
- M.Tech/M.E. Structural Engineering via GATE
- M.Tech in Earthquake Engineering (e.g. IIT Roorkee)
- MS in Structural Engineering abroad (USA, Germany, Canada)
- PhD in structural or computational mechanics
- UPSC Engineering Services (ESE) – Civil
- MBA or PG in construction/project management
Civil & Structural FAQs
Is Civil and Structural Engineering different from Civil Engineering?
It is the same core civil engineering degree with extra structural subjects. Employers and government recruiters treat it as civil engineering, so you remain eligible for all civil jobs and GATE Civil.
Which colleges offer B.E. Civil and Structural Engineering?
Very few. Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu is the best-known example and admits through TNEA. Most students take B.Tech Civil and specialise later.
Should I do an M.Tech to become a structural engineer?
It is strongly recommended. Most design consultancies prefer an M.Tech in Structural Engineering because it covers dynamics, finite element analysis and advanced design in depth.
Which software should a structural engineering student learn?
Commonly used tools are AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000 and a BIM tool such as Revit or Tekla. Software skills matter, but understanding the theory behind the results matters more.
Can I write UPSC ESE after this course?
Yes. A B.E. in Civil and Structural Engineering is accepted for the Civil Engineering stream of the UPSC Engineering Services Examination, subject to UPSC's eligibility rules each year.
