What is Building & Construction?
Where a traditional civil engineering course spends a lot of time on analysis and design, Building and Construction Engineering puts the spotlight on execution: choosing materials, sequencing work on site, formwork and scaffolding, construction equipment, plumbing, electrical and fire services in buildings, quality testing, safety, quantity estimation and contracts.
Students still learn the civil engineering core (mechanics, surveying, soil mechanics, structural design) so that they can read and check drawings, but the later semesters add construction planning and scheduling, project management tools, building services and sustainable or green building practices.
Honest note on availability: very few universities use this exact branch name. Examples include MBM University, Jodhpur (B.E. Building and Construction Technology) and Jadavpur University, Kolkata (B.E. Construction Engineering). Many polytechnics also run diplomas in construction technology. If you cannot get one of these seats, B.Tech Civil Engineering with construction electives, followed by an M.Tech or PG in construction management, leads to the same jobs.

Eligibility & admission
- Pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Minimum marks are usually 45% in PCM for general category and 40% for reserved categories; check the specific state counselling rules.
- Rajasthan institutes such as MBM University fill seats through state engineering counselling; Jadavpur University admits through WBJEE.
- Diploma holders in civil or construction engineering can usually join the second year by lateral entry.
- For a polytechnic diploma, Class 10 pass is enough in most states.

Salary
Freshers usually start as site or planning engineers at around ₹3–6 LPA (approx.); large EPC companies and real-estate developers may pay more to graduates from well-known institutes. Site postings often add accommodation or site allowances.
With 5–8 years of experience as a project or planning manager, pay commonly reaches ₹10–20 LPA (approx.), and senior project heads on large projects earn more. Skills in planning software, quantity surveying, contracts and a PG in construction management raise pay. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
Construction is one of India's biggest employers, and 2026 continues to see large spending on housing schemes, highways, railways, metro systems, airports and industrial parks. Every one of these projects needs engineers who understand execution, cost and quality, so demand for construction-focused engineers is steady, especially at site and planning level.
The sector is also modernising: precast and modular construction, green building ratings, digital site monitoring and BIM-based planning are spreading. Graduates who add planning software, safety and contract skills to their degree progress faster into management roles.
