ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education)

A 4-year dual degree after Class 12 that combines graduation with B.Ed

ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Programme) is a four-year dual-degree course, introduced by NCTE under NEP 2020, that gives you a bachelor's degree and a B.Ed together. Admission is through NCET, a national entrance test conducted by the NTA, and it saves a year compared with a 3-year degree plus a 2-year B.Ed.

What is ITEP?

ITEP is the teacher-training model promoted by NEP 2020. Instead of finishing a degree first and then doing B.Ed, you study a subject (for example Physics, History or Commerce) and education side by side from the first semester, and graduate with a dual degree: B.A. B.Ed, B.Sc. B.Ed or B.Com. B.Ed.

The course follows four stages of school education: Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary. It mixes your main discipline, education courses, Indian knowledge traditions, languages, arts and plenty of school-based practice and internship. NCTE has asked ITEP institutions to admit students only through NCET, which NTA conducts as a computer-based test.

How it differs from close alternatives: a regular B.A./B.Sc. followed by a 2-year B.Ed takes five years; ITEP takes four. The older B.El.Ed and B.A./B.Sc. B.Ed integrated courses are being phased into ITEP. ITEP is a good choice only if you are fairly sure you want to teach, since its degree is built around teaching.

  • People drawn to child development, school reform and NEP-style teaching
  • Students aiming for government school jobs through CTET/TET and teacher recruitment

Eligibility & admission

  • Pass in Class 12 (or equivalent) from a recognised board, in any stream.
  • Your Class 12 subjects can decide which major you can take (for example B.Sc. B.Ed usually needs Science).
  • NCET itself does not fix a single minimum percentage; each participating institute applies its own marks and reservation rules.
  • Students who appear in Class 12 in the admission year can apply for NCET.
  • Reservation follows central or state rules of the admitting institute.

How admission works

  1. Register for NCET on the NTA portal (the 2026 cycle took applications in February–March)
  2. Choose your preferred programme and participating institutes while applying
  3. Appear in the computer-based NCET (held in April in 2026)
  4. Check your NCET score when NTA declares results
  5. Apply to or join counselling of the participating institutes, which publish their own merit lists
  6. Verify documents and pay fees at the allotted institute

Salary

New ITEP graduates in private schools usually start at ₹3–5 LPA (approx.). Government teacher posts such as KVS or state TGT start around ₹7–9 LPA including allowances (approx.), after clearing CTET/TET and the recruitment exam.

Pay grows with a master's (for PGT roles), experience and leadership duties; senior teachers and coordinators can reach ₹8–15 LPA (approx.). Graduates from IIT/NIT programmes may also find well-paid roles in ed-tech and curriculum design. Figures vary; check current placement reports.

Scope & higher studies

NEP 2020 aims to make the 4-year integrated B.Ed the minimum teacher qualification over time, which puts ITEP at the centre of future teacher hiring. NCTE has been expanding the number of ITEP institutions, and admission is now centralised through NCET.

Because the programme is new, the first large batches are only now graduating, so check placement information for the specific institute. Strong subject knowledge plus a teaching degree gives ITEP graduates flexibility across schools, ed-tech and education programmes.

After this course

  • M.A. / M.Sc. / M.Com in your major subject (useful for PGT posts)
  • M.Ed
  • M.A. Education
  • UGC NET and PhD in Education
  • Master's abroad in education or education policy

ITEP FAQs

What is ITEP?

ITEP is a 4-year integrated programme that gives you a dual degree such as B.Sc. B.Ed or B.A. B.Ed. It was launched by NCTE under NEP 2020 to replace the older route of a 3-year degree followed by a 2-year B.Ed.

Is NCET compulsory for ITEP?

Yes. NCTE has directed ITEP institutions to admit students only through NCET for the 2026-27 session. NCET is conducted by NTA as a computer-based test.

Is ITEP equivalent to a regular B.Ed?

Yes, ITEP gives you a bachelor's degree and a B.Ed recognised by NCTE. After it you can take CTET/TET and apply for teacher jobs, or go for a master's degree.

Can a Commerce or Arts student apply for ITEP?

Yes. Students from any stream can take NCET; Commerce students usually choose B.Com. B.Ed and Arts students B.A. B.Ed. B.Sc. B.Ed generally needs Science in Class 12.

Can I switch to a non-teaching career after ITEP?

You can, since you also earn a regular bachelor's degree. You can do a master's, prepare for government exams or join ed-tech, though the course is designed mainly for teaching.
