What is BFA?
BFA (called BVA, Bachelor of Visual Arts, at some universities) is a practical art degree. The first year is usually a foundation course in drawing, colour, design and materials; after that you specialise in painting, sculpture, printmaking, applied art (advertising and illustration) or related areas.
Most of your time is spent in studios making work, supported by art history, aesthetics and critical writing. You build a portfolio and usually finish with a display or exhibition.
BFA differs from B.Des, which focuses on solving user and product problems through design, and from animation degrees, which focus on software pipelines. BFA is centred on personal artistic expression and traditional and contemporary art practice, though applied-art graduates often work in advertising and design too.

Growth in digital media, animation, gaming, publishing and brand content has widened job options for fine-arts graduates in 2026, especially those in applied art and digital illustration. India's contemporary art market and art fairs also give artists more visibility than before.
Careers in fine arts are less predictable than in many other fields, so students who combine traditional skills with digital tools and build a strong online portfolio do best.
