BA Economics

Learn how markets, money and policy work — a launchpad for finance, policy and UPSC

BA Economics is a three- or four-year undergraduate degree that studies how people, businesses and governments use limited resources. It combines economic theory, mathematics, statistics and Indian economic policy, and leads to roles in finance, research, consulting, public policy and the civil services.

What is BA Economics?

BA Economics explains how prices are set, why inflation and unemployment rise or fall, how trade and banking work, and what governments can do about poverty and growth. You study microeconomics (individuals and firms), macroeconomics (the whole economy), and the Indian economy.

Good economics programmes are quantitative: expect calculus, statistics and econometrics, plus software such as Excel, R, Stata or Python for data analysis. Electives cover development, finance, environment, game theory and public policy.

Compared with a B.Com, which focuses on accounting and business practice, BA Economics is more analytical and theory-driven. Compared with a BBA, it is less about management and more about understanding markets and policy. A B.Sc Economics version exists at some universities with even heavier maths.
