What is Transportation / Highway Engg?
Transportation engineers decide where a new highway or metro line should go, how wide a road needs to be, how thick its pavement should be, how traffic signals should be timed, and how a city can reduce congestion and accidents. The field mixes design (geometric design, pavements, rail track), planning (travel demand forecasting, trip generation, mode choice, route assignment) and operations (traffic engineering, road safety, intelligent transport systems).
An M.Tech typically covers traffic flow theory, pavement materials and design, highway geometric design, urban transport planning, public transport systems, road safety audits, GIS and transport modelling software, and transport economics. Some programmes, such as IIT Bombay's Transportation Systems Engineering, lean more towards planning and modelling, while others emphasise pavements and highways.
UG or PG? Most Indian students study transportation as part of B.Tech Civil Engineering (highway and railway engineering are standard civil subjects) and then specialise through an M.Tech in Transportation Engineering after GATE. There is no widely offered B.Tech branch with this exact name.

Salary
M.Tech Transportation Engineering graduates from IITs and NITs typically start at about ₹5–12 LPA (approx.) in consultancies, highway contractors and transport planning firms. B.Tech Civil graduates in highway site roles usually start around ₹3–6 LPA (approx.).
With 8–10 years of experience, highway and transport planning professionals often earn ₹15–30 LPA (approx.), and team leaders on DPR or metro projects more. Software skills (VISSIM, PTV Visum, Civil 3D), data analytics and project experience raise pay. Government jobs follow pay-matrix levels with allowances. Figures vary; check current placement reports.
Scope & higher studies
India has one of the world's largest road networks and is expanding expressways, metro systems in many cities, regional rapid transit and dedicated freight corridors in 2026. Road safety is a national priority, and city authorities need traffic and mobility plans, so transportation engineers are in steady demand across government and consultancies.
The field is becoming data-driven: GPS and mobile data, ITS, electric buses and EV infrastructure, and sustainable urban mobility planning are growth areas. Graduates who combine engineering basics with modelling software and analytics have the best prospects.
After this course
- PhD in transportation engineering
- MS in Transportation Engineering or Planning abroad
- Master of Planning (Transport Planning)
- Road safety audit and ITS certifications
- UPSC ESE (Civil) and state engineering services
- MBA in Infrastructure or Logistics
Transportation / Highway Engg FAQs
Is Transportation Engineering a separate B.Tech?
Usually not in India. You study highway and railway engineering within B.Tech Civil, then specialise through an M.Tech in Transportation Engineering.
Which GATE paper do I need?
The GATE Civil Engineering (CE) paper is the standard requirement for M.Tech Transportation Engineering at IITs and NITs.
What is the difference between transportation engineering and transport planning?
Transportation engineering covers design and operations of roads, pavements and traffic. Transport planning, often offered by planning schools, focuses more on land use, policy and network planning, though the two overlap.
Are there government jobs in this field?
Yes. NHAI, state PWDs, railways, metro corporations and road research institutes recruit civil engineers, often through GATE, UPSC ESE or state commission exams.
Which software is useful?
Common tools include AutoCAD Civil 3D, MX Road/OpenRoads, VISSIM and PTV Visum for traffic simulation, and GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
