What is Marine Engg.?
A ship is a floating power station. Marine engineers keep its main engine, generators, boilers, pumps, refrigeration and pollution-control systems running safely, usually while at sea for months. The B.Tech Marine Engineering programme combines mechanical and electrical engineering with ship-specific subjects and maritime safety training.
Most graduates join the merchant navy. After the degree they join a ship as a junior or Fifth Engineer, complete the required sea service, and then clear DG Shipping Certificate of Competency exams to rise through Fourth, Third, Second and finally Chief Engineer.
This differs from Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (offered at IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and others), which focuses on designing ships and offshore structures rather than running their machinery. Many admission rules are set by DG Shipping and the Indian Maritime University (IMU), so always check the latest IMU-CET notification.

Salary
Pay at sea is usually quoted per month in US dollars and depends on rank, ship type and company. A junior engineer may earn around ₹35,000–80,000 per month equivalent (approx.); certified Third and Second Engineers commonly earn ₹1.5–5 lakh per month equivalent (approx.); Chief Engineers on large or specialised vessels can earn considerably more. Pay is only for months on board, and NRI status from long sea service can bring tax benefits.
Shore jobs such as superintendent or surveyor pay well but usually need years of sea experience. Figures vary; check current placement reports and company offers.
Scope & higher studies
Around 90% of world trade by volume moves by sea, and Indian officers are a major part of the global seafaring workforce. India's Maritime India Vision 2030 and shipbuilding push, along with port expansion, aim to grow domestic shipping, shipyards and coastal transport.
Shipping is also moving to cleaner fuels and more automation to meet IMO emissions targets, so marine engineers with knowledge of LNG, dual-fuel engines, batteries and digital monitoring will be in demand. Job markets can be cyclical, so choose a reputed institute with strong placement links to shipping companies.
After this course
- DG Shipping Certificate of Competency (Class IV to Class I, Chief Engineer)
- M.Tech in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture via GATE
- MBA / MSc in Shipping, Port and Logistics Management
- Marine surveyor and classification society training
- MSc in Marine Engineering or Maritime Studies abroad (UK, Norway, Singapore)
